2013 Lancer ES Sportback Mysterious Coolant Loss

Hey, guys! So, I have a mysterious coolant loss and it's driving me crazy. My husband was sitting in the car at work, it had been idling for probably 45 minutes. He shuts it off but puts the ignition back to Run and leaves the engine off. The temperature gauge pegs out during the time the engine if off. (He had the temp gauge display up at the time.) He tried to start the engine but it would shut down after running for maybe like 10 seconds or so and the service engine soon light would be on the entire time. After the engine cooled off, there wasn't any further trouble out of it. I noticed the coolant reservoir is almost gone dry with the engine at normal operating temperature. I know that it shouldn't be that low AT ALL. I can't figure out for the life of me where the coolant has gone. I don't think the head gasket is blown, it doesn't burn coolant. I don't have any more hair to pull out over it. Any thoughts would be welcomed.
