Clutch Chatter

Okay I was wondering if anyone else experiences a clutch chatter when starting off in the morning. Only every once in a while do I get this but it's scary and I don't like it. can anyone explain what this is?

its because in the morning its real cold and the fluids aren't warmed up yet. let your car run for like 5 mins or dont drive it hard until it warms up and you shouldn't have that problem.

Warming the car up properly is essential. Either that or your not getting fully into gear. I'd assuming it's warming the car though. My rule as of late (since it's been getting cold and I don't have my auto starter yet) is wait till it starts moving for the temp line...when it's close it's warm enough and the temp'll climb real quickly even just driving lightly. And, most importantly, the car won't dance when I shift. Oddly enough it only happens from first to second though no matter how cold the car is.

I have the same problem. I let it run for about 5 to 10 minutes before I leave and still have some chatter. It stops after I drive it for a mile or two.

It may just not be fully in gear. It happens.

There is some fairly wierd behavior as far as the clutch is concerned. That may have to do with the fact that it has a pretty wicked slip point, but, who knows.

I'll relate a bit of wierdness that I've had. Okay, since about midsummer, before I got my CAI, I think, the car would have a clattering sound at idle. But, only at certain conditions. If the AC/Defrost was on, and if the clutch was disengaged. It sounded a bit as if a coke can was wedged somewhere in the engine compartment. So, I ignore it (the most stupid thing to do with a car, looking back I can't even begin to believe that I did, as much as I love that car, and I'm glad it all ended well), and keep driving. Last month comes. I start to hear a bit of belt "whine." I go, alright, I'm taking it in. I go in, get chided for my Cold Air, idle threats are made about my warranty. I counter with my rights under the law, and they kinda back down, now just lightly recommending that I remove my CAI. Anyway, they keep it for 3 days. What was wrong with it? Nothing. Apparently, this sound is inherent in all of the 4G9's. I know this because I was pretty incredulous, and asked them to please do pull another, new Lancer around. They did better. They brought a Lancer and a Mirage. Both Manual trannys, and guess what? Same sound. Anyone else notice this?

What it can be, but it shouldn't be happening on a new car. My buddy who is a mitsu mechanic and who works on my talon for me at times told me. Cause I asked him the same question cause my talon does it. He says the clutch can get "flat spots" or "bare spots". where it does not catch good. And it causes it to slip, and in turn you feel the vibration from it. If you drive your lancer hard there is a chance you are wearing your clutch prematurely. I'd prolly be safe to say the stock lancer clutch is not made for that.

Just my 2 pennies.

Possible, but it only happens in first for most people I believe. Seems like it would happen in all gears if it were clutch related. I'm convinced it has to do with temp or whether you make sure your're properly in gear. It used to happen to me when it was semi-cold especially, but it hasn't in sometime. It seems to me that something caused by excessive wear would only get worse with time. Maybe it's several different things on different cars, but warming up the car for me and just being certain I puter her into first fully has stopped my chatter.

Well put as usual HK. Like your quote. Too bad you can't translate that sound that Bricktop makes when Turkish bumps into him into type.
