I like to use giant pair of channel locks and carefully spread the caliper open.

i use c-clamps to compress mine....... thats how we used to roll on the ole high school shop. none of this fancy crap.

C-clamps are even better if you have the right ones.

where did you come up with that idea? I just said I have to do all four corners this time, which means 2 discs/pads, and 2 shoes. No need for rear discs now.

Can you actually notice a difference with the rotors, or is it wise to upgrade the brake pads at the same time?

Rotors will dissapate heat better than stock plus these are better than OEM so they will last longer. Pads are going be main upgrade to increase stopping power.
