I swear nobody looks for anything themselves.

It's been discussed ad nauseum. It's an air flow converter piggyback ECU used to tune your air/fuel ratios. You don't NEED any mods to run it. However, it will not benefit you much unless you have mods that alter or require tuning of your air/fuel ratio.

EDIT: One the the S-AFC does that the II doesn't is get sold in the US. Apexi USA still isn't selling them unless they're just really slow to update their pages.

with the apex-i afc controller do you have to manually configure it when you hook it up. is it plug and play?

It uses your ECU's current setup as a basemap. You can tune +/- % from there.

Funny question in the sense there's no real answer. It's all dependent on how heavily the car is modded and when/where it needs more fuel and that's a pretty individual set of parameters. If you have an intake an exhaust, any gains with the AFC would be practically worthless or unnoticeable. Anytime you're moving significantly more air than stock is really when you need this device. Playing with it should also be a)done by a pro with a dynometer or b)with someone who's had prior tuning experience with it. Wouldn't want to melt a piston to your cylinder wall would you?
