Dont do it, I have owned a 99 jetta 1.8. Major feul leak, major oil leak, power window broke, numerous electical and sensor problems. Traded that in for a 2003 A4 1.8, It caught fire 2 months later, and I have a friend with a 2000 a4 1.8 and he absolutley hates it, to say the least it keeps him broke with repairs.. Literally....

DO NOT buy an A4 for a toy car. You will be VERY disappointed. I drive VW's / Audi's every day.. The A series are pure luxury with a crappy squishy suspension.

For under 7k get a used miata or something and slap some suspension on it. You'll have a lot more fun with way less maintenance.

A4 is a nice project car. A good friend of mine has an '02 S4 as his daily driver. Only mod so far is a Revo chip. It plugs in at the diagnostic port, so it can easily be removed incase you need to take it to the dealer. His warranty is almost expired so he recently took the car in to replace some failed rubber hoses, intercooler y-pipe, the display btw the speedo and rpm gauges, some interior bits, and a rattling drivers window. Luckily this was all covered under warrenty, since it would obviously cost a good amount. Its not so much that the A4 can have major problems at high miles, the 1.8t engine is very strong, the tranny is very aswell, its all the little things that by themselves don't cost a great deal, but they can quickly add up if there are multiple little problems as my friend had. Just watch out for that and you'll be good.

Scott, looking at your past car selection, I don't think you'll be happy with the A4's performance unless you spend some serious money on it. I would probably look elsewhere unless you really like the A4.
