A lancer is a lancer because Mitsubishi wanted to globalize the platform, as well as create name recognition before the Evo came here. It was a bureaucratic/marketing type of decision, corporately. It is NOT just a beefed up, prettied up Lancer! The Evo is almost if not entirely mechanically different from a standard Lancer. The drivetrain, engine, suspension is all independently manufactured and configured. In fact, the only sheet metal the two share are the front doors, roof panel and trunk lid.
