Exclamation Top Gear 2004 Car of the Year... (video)

2004 Top Gear Car of the Year

My Take: I think it looks really sweet, the new look is waaaaay better than the older and it's a torque monster down below. I'd really like to test drive one when they hit US shores early this year.

what was the BS he said about honda at the end??? I didn't quite get that. The Civic Type R is faster, cheaper, and unquestionably of better build quality and he took a cheap shot at it like it was some POS next to the V-dub. I've always liked V-dubs myself but after having 3 friends have to ditch theirs within 3 years because of problems and the catastrophic drop to the bottom of the JD Power quality ratings, this new GTI will have to prove itself a LOT!!! Besides, if you read as many brit car and bike mags as I do you'll know that the brits suck the GTI's d!ck like they do the Honda CBR in motorcycles so their praise must be taken with a grain of salt......this was made pretty evident with that Honda comment. I'd take the Type R in a second and have a faster car for much less money that I know absolutely will not break.

Vid was great. But they can keep the gti, I would buy the type R if I was over the pond.

I agree.

I believe that punk's exact quote in the video was "if you buy a honda you end up with a honda. If you buy the vw you wont."

I dont understand this. What? are civics rice rockets over there too?

I give Respect to the civic type R

Great video though.

On Fifth Gear, a competing show that was started by some Top Gear alumnae, the Civic Type R is their choice for top hatch. Another nice thing about that show is that we get it here on Speed channel. It's a fun way to see what they get in europe vs. the US. I also like the reviewers a lot, they are clearly into cars and do all the test track work themselves.

Agreed - there is some old vids around when Tiff was still with Top Gear - Thrashing some Evo's, RS4's and 911 TT's - good stuff!

Eh, it is a good car, and one that most people in europe can afford to buy and drive. I don't think it's necessarily unworthy. Keep in mind that the Evo there is basically an exotic, since the insurance and costs are MUCH higher than they are here. I know we don't get the AYC or the climate control (who cares about this, again?) but we have it good here.

Looks good but if it's made in Mexico I don't think I'll want one. VWs over there AFAIK are made in Germany.
