"Diesel takeover complete
Mercedes has demolished the last oilburner taboo by plumbing diesels into its two-seat roadsters. The SL400 and SLK320 CDIs are Vision concepts, which by Benz tradition means they will soon make production.
The SLK320 uses Mercedes' all new V6 diesel, but with three turbos working sequentially to generate 268 bhp and 465 lb ft of torque - more twist action than a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. It will blast to 62 mph in 5.3 seconds yet return 38 mpg.
The SL400 uses Mercedes's third generation twin-turbo V8. It gets new turbos and a modified water-cooled air intake that pushes peak power to 315 bhp and 538 lb ft of torque. That's enough to hurtle the big SL to 62 mph in 5.8s - half a second quicker than the current petrol SL500"
I mean there are definite advantages to turbodiesels and lots of potential if done right...
