What causes a smokey exhaust

My bro has a chrysler Le Baron and it is giving excessive smoke and we are not sure what to check to get rid of the smoke. Any ideas?

Black or White smoke? white is burning oil... black has to do with a/f problems like a bad carb... I know this because I fix lawn mowers all day long.

Autoparts store sells something for burning oil. Its usually a quart and you add it to the oil, try it, cant hurt.

you wanna be sure get a leak down tester for your coolant system..rent from autozone.. pump the system to 16 psi and see if the pressure drops. if it drops 1-2 puonds just pump back up.. you shouldnt have to pump it more than 3 times.. than leave it it should stay there... or do the easy things first, look for sludge on the dipstick, or see if youre spark plugs are fouled or white.. thats how youll find out...

Can also drain your oil and smell it. If you smell antifreeze in your oil, then the headgasket is leaking. If the smoke has a blue hue to it, you're burning oil. Could be from a leaking headgasket, or oil getting past the rings, or something like that.

why drain the oil, just smell the dipstick. besides water floats on oil, so hell see the mud on the stick..
