Ditched my Evo for a newer M3
The E46 M3 just doesn't do a lot for me personally. I'm not interested in the luxury features, and the car is a little overweight, as all BMWs seem to be in recent years. Honestly, I'm just as happy with the Evo, especially considering it has AWD. FWIW, I owned an E36 M3 for over two years and the trend towards more features and bigger and heavier isn't the packaging I want in a car.

Congrats on the new M3 dave!
Smitty,
Just curious, but can you name another brand new car for under 32,000 that is better all around than the evo? I know I couldn't which is why I bought an 05 evo at invoice.
Also, wasn't the evo VIII picked best sport compact car ever by sport compact car mag? That includes the M3 and a host of other badass cars.

M3 vs EVO
I used to have an 91' 300zx TT, up to 2005.
I enjoyed that car quite a bit for the performance,
handling. However, when the steering pump, AC,
steering rack bushing all began to go at the same
time, I decided it was time to look for another car.
I went and drove a 2004 M3 in December 04, and
I almost bought the car. However, I changed my mind
at the last moment; because I did not feel it handling or
performed better than my 300zx TT, and I did not wanted
to give up my 300zx for the M3.
I had decided to keep my 300zx TT, because I thought
I would probably have to go for something like a
911 or Corvette to match its performance. However,
the reality of a family, and the need for more practicality
scratch those options. And there does not seem to be
another car, other than an M5 which appeal to me, which
unfortunately was out of production from 2003 onward,
until the next M5, but I was not looking forward to its sequential
(automatic type) transmission.
So I continued to fix my 300zx TT.
However, in March 2005, I had the chance to test drive a yellow
03' EVO. And even though the engine was not much stronger than
the 300zx, its steeiring feel, handling was what impressed me.
I had driven Ferrari, corvettes before, but this thing really felt
so good in my hand, compared to anything I had driven before
(maybe I should have tried an Porsche first?)
After this test drive, I felt I would be willing to give up
the 300zx for the EVO. I bought an 05' MR afterward.
Compare it to the M3, I think the EVO actually rides better, but
the evo sticks much stronger, transient response was sharper.
Although the M3 does have more torque right off, and
it feels stronger once you are past 70 mph than the EVO.
Like everything in life, there are always compromises;
but I am overall very happy with the EVO, no regrets
Thanks

BMWs are over-priced for the performance you get. I suppose I would own own if I was ugly, or had a small weiner. Meet one of us at the track in that thing and you are owned.
EVO - Race Car
M3 - Luxury Sports Car
I prefer my race car (I can afford both).

The M3 is truly a fine automobile. 333hp out of a N/A smooth inline-6 with all the creature comforts of a BMW and with a fairly compliant suspension is a tough to beat package. An Evo might take the M3 to 60 or even in the 1/4, but for pure top end look to the trap speeds to see which is king! Around most road courses stock for stock you will have a true battle.
I do however take offense to the label of an Evo being developed and marketed towards a younger (and as you stated immature) audience. I for one can afford an M3, and decided to lease a car that most would argue is even grander-- the supercharged E55. There isn't another 4 door out there under $80k that can trap at or near 120. Yet I find myself reaching more and more for the keys of the Evo.
The E55, like the M3 is an anesthesized car, disconnected by the plethora of electronic intervention and launch control. Sure it's stylish, fast, and screams euro-luxury. Girls you date may even like it more (let's not get into the politics with using a car to attract members of the oppostie sex). I also gather that it is difficult to seat four male friends comfortably in an M3. The last purist car to come out of BMW was probably the E30 M3 almost 20 years ago.
I for one perfer the scapel like precision of the turbocharged Evo. The interior may not be covered with acres of walnut or leather, but not once has my backached or my legs cramped up in the Recaro seats. Although the engine is buzzy when the tachometer passes four thousand-- there is not a better soundtrack than the mechanical sounds of gears, turbo, and exhaust. Finally all of the driver interfaces-steering, brakes, gearshift, and throttle-show that the Evo is serious about communicating with its driver.
Finally-- why buy a $50,000 car if you are still renting-- that is good money that should be going towards a nice pad bro! Yes the M3 is a great auto, but I do not think it is a better car than the Evo.

I'm not a teenager and I drive my car everyday. Since I don't envision many adolescents being able to afford a $30K car, I believe I'm not an exception to your statement. Therefore, your statement is invalid.
Back to the topic, great car choice!
i used to own an E36M3 and was going to trade up to the E46M but after a few test drives, i didnt see a huge advantage in spending $30k or so more for the E46M, sure straight line is faster but other than that, it's basically the same as the E36M and i think the older generation has a better steering feel, imo.
I owned one of the first M3's(e46) off the boat, early 2001. Beautiful looking car (Photo file too big). A lot of fun. But lets be clear if you want a proper interior buy an Audi, they beat BMW hands down. If you want the best performance buy an evo. Period. You made a nice choice but your attitude sounds like you care more about the badging. ie. paying 1800 for an exhaust is really not that cool I had full super sprint and gained 10 whp
Oh and by the way u r gonna miss AWD...
