PM member KTT. The E46M3 is a great car - depends on what you're looking for. If it's performance and the ability to modify for cheap - then I'd keep the Evo.
I had a 1.9L Z3 which I supercharged among endless power modifications (cost an arm and leg - yes worth it but still not fast enough for me). Gave it to my Dad. Got the Evo.

Nothing wrong with your thinking, an E46 M3 is a very nice car and a worthy upgrade from an EVO. The M3 is a great day to day driver and responds pretty well to mild mods (expensive though).

In my opinion the E46 M3 is one of the best looking cars on the road. I would drive one in a heart beat but they are expensive.

I recently traded in my 2003 EVO for a 2003 M3. Both are great cars. I got an SMG transmission and love it. The EVO feels much more tossable in turns, but the M3 handles great, just heavier feeling. Acceleration is a blast in the M3. Nothing like getting into beautiful leather, and having everything at your fingertips in the M3. I had the EVO for 2 years, and plan to drive the M3 for 2 years. I always like to try different cars. My suggestion, would be to try to find a nice certified preowned M3. If you buy a new one, you lose your a**. They lose 15-20K in the first two years, but then only about 5K a year after that.

I met a fellow Evo owner who was an ex-E46 M3 owner, he said the Evo is a great car, handles good, less expensive to maintain.

I'm thinking of doing the same thing... I love my evo, but I was at the track with a guy running the same times as me and his only mod was camber plates. I think with Hoosiers/exhaust/ECU you have a very nice M3. Its also one of the best looking cars on the road.
