Even if the Mazda 3 end up being a SPEED platform adding the additional weight of an AWD system will kick the weight up considerably by a 200+ lbs.

From what i heard the mazdaspeed 6 is made to compete against other models such as the legacy and other midsize sport sedans. I do not think that it is made to compete with the evo-sti group. IT is a very hot car though, the interior is nice and everything, i thought about buying one because i own a regular mazda 6 but the evo is so much better, i think it'll handle nicely because my mazda 6 handles pretty. Overall i think the speed 6 would be a nice daily driver but I do not think it can compete with an evo or an sti unless modded. just my thoughts.

I don't think an EVO or STi owner has anything to worry about performance vs. performance and handling. The EVO wins hands down in those categories.

I think like everyone is chiming in...is that the Mazda 6 SPEED is offering some sacrifice in overall performance #'s to compete more in the refined or luxurious category.

True, but it'll still be lighter than both, the Evo and the STi, by nearly 200-300lbs. That's a lot of weight.

Unless his girlfriend is a fat chic......... bwhahahaha

Anyway, the Mazda 6 is a pretty good looking car. Was one of the 6 cars I looked at before I bought the EVO. Even in its non turbo form the 6 is a pretty peppy car. It's not the same type of car as the EVO so thats no comparo, but if you want a nice car for long trips with the family .....this would be right up there. Even if inflated the HP has to be close to 250, 260 range.

Yeah, I think the Mazda 6 is pretty sharp also. My wife is looking at them for possibly her next car. Of course, I'm trying to talk her into a Subaru Legacy GT. However, the Mazda 6 has MORE HP, MORE ROOM, and very competitive pricing with the Subaru Legacy GT.

The only thing I really don't like about the MazdaSpeed 6 are the wheels. I like the other wheels better that come on the V6 model. However, I've heard that the Mazda 6 has been suffering some reliability issues, whereas the Subaru Legacy GT has been recommended by numerous sources, and has been proven to be very reliable.

My wife is pretty much torn between the new Jetta, and a Mazda 6. As far as styling goes, I'm not big on the Jetta, but it is a roomy car, and seems pretty nice. I do like the Mazda 6. It's a sharp car, and still has room. Then, of course, there's the Legacy GT, which I think is pretty sporty, and it was a pleasant drive. I also like the styling. I like the 6's styling and the GT's just about the same, and could be happier with either one, really.

I would bet an AWD mazdaspeed 3 would come in around 3200 lbs considering the s40 AWD weighs about 3450 and it's the same chassis.

I dunno.....but the S40 looks pretty "substantial" next to the Mazda 3.

The MazdaSpeed6 is really NOT meant to compete with the STi or EVO - it's aimed more at the Legacy GT, lower end Audi's, Altima SE-R, etc...

I test drove one a little while back, see link...

Man, there are tons of cars that cost well over $30K with slower 1/4 traps speeds..... That's only one measure of the car and not too important for a lot of ppl.

Ok true. But most people that are gonna buy an AWD turbo car are in it for the speed.

Not really, the only real high performance AWD turbo cars available with really good performance in 1/4 mile are the EVO & STi. There must be at least 4~5 other AWD turbo cars out there that ppl want for other reasons. Subaru alone has at least 4 models of AWD/Turbo cars. Then you have the Audis (AWD A4, S4, TT) and of course this new Mazda... I'm probably leaving out others too.....
