Quick question though... where's the STis Intercooler? Oh, mounted in the engine bay directly over the engine you say?

the STi uses a top mount intercooler in the same place as the WRX. It is larger then the WRX's intercooler though.

Trigeek, pretty sure SteetLancer was being sarcastic and poking fun at the STi for having a TMIC.

I dont know....having an intercooler on the top of the engine....imagine you were sitting in traffic on a summer day and its like 97C outside...you're intercooler is gonna suffer from heat soak...all that heat will go up and straight through that intercooler

I prefer a front mount intercooler....
I also prefer the evo over the subie

Little from column A, little from column B. Know exactly where the intercooler is, and yes, I think it's a very inefficient design. I know why it's a TMIC in the USDM, but, why like that in Japan? It'd seem that there really is no benefit to having it on top.

Where's the FMIC on the EVO sitting, oh that's right, inches away from the A/C condenser and radiator. Both a FMIC and TMIC can heat soak without a good airflow. The TMIC on the STI is actually over the tranny, and has some space behind it. So at speed it does get good airflow. It's not quite as effective as a FMIC at speed, but it does the job fine. Especially when you consider the STI is 2.5l and won't need to run as much boost as the EVO to make good power.

I think there's a couple reasons for Subaru sticking with a TMIC. For 1, like I said it does the job fine, why fix something that isn't broke. For 2, less lag. Finally it's tradition, the Impreza originally started out with rally in mind and a TMIC is protected from debris and won't have a problem in deep snow with the front grille getting blocked.

The thing you gotta remember is, the boxer engine pushes heat out the sides, not the top, so the TMIC is not a major factor.

Subaru already mention about bring over the STi BEFORE the WRX was launched, so has nothing to do with the EVO.

Also consider that the TMIC uses shorter tubing, so there is less lag between the time you push the pedal and the boost kicks in.

i think the subaru wrc cars actually have a front mounted intercooler, and also a lot of people with wrx's have done front mount intercooler conversions so that kinda says something.

True but also the dark pavement your driving on will asorbed alot of the sun, in return giving off alot of heat that could rise right into the FMIC

YES, but the WRC's FMIC is mount inside the top part of the bumper, and the radiator is mounted in the bottom part, so they don't really touch each other, just like the TMIC don't touch the radiator.
