Now isn't that why I said tradition, and originally started out. All past tense terms meaning that's how it used to be. IIRC, 2001 with the new body style was the first year for a FMIC on the Impreza WRC. Like BoxerSTI said, it's currently mounted above the radiator.

LoL! That was one of the reasons why i didn't go for the STi. I'm so used to working on my old turbo Honda and considering how easy to reach things made me stay with the inline config motor.

Some things are easier on a Subaru boxer. Don't even have to jack the car up for an oil change. All the accesories and belts are easy to get to. Actually pulling the engine is pretty easy too.

The uppipe is a major PITA. Fuel rails can be tricky. Spark plugs defidently aren't as easy as an inline engine, but they aren't to bad with the right tools.

And with the platium spark plugs, you don't have to change them that offen. Platium spark plugs come stock on all WRX by the way.

i think the intercooler is in on top because when rallying... you know you might hit something and if you do.. no worry about a hose popping off the intercooler in front and losing all drivability. however the top mounted intercooler can not get as much air as the fron mounted intercooler. rember that when the fan is on it is pulling air away from both the radiater and the intercooler just my 2c but rock on with an intercooler.. makes a world of difference when you start pushing some serious boost

Especially when you consider the STI is 2.5l and won't need to run as much boost as the EVO to make good power.

I think there's a couple reasons for Subaru sticking with a TMIC. For 1, like I said it does the job fine, why fix something that isn't broke. For 2, less lag. Finally it's tradition, the Impreza originally started out with rally in mind and a TMIC is protected from debris and won't have a problem in deep snow with the front grille getting blocked.
Hey Ben, if you are going to talk about design then get your facts straight. For your info, the WRC STi's intercooler is a FMIC. The hood scoop doesn't do anything on the car. The radiator that you see between the headlights on the WRC STi is actually the intercooler, so I guess your theory is not valid. Oh one more thing, wonder why Tommi Makkinen didn't finish the Swedish rally last year? Because his FMIC got clogged up with snow and the Impreza went POOF!!!!!!!!

If you read the whole thread... we all know that

The WRC's FMIC is mounted inside the top part of the bumper, and the radiator is mounted in the bottom part, so they don't really touch each other, just like the TMIC don't touch the radiator. And the scoop does function, please do some research before you speak.

I agree. I did not buy an Evo 8 for looks...I bought it for what it can do and how it represents a very special type of automobile. Both the Evo and STi look like purpose built automobiles that will easily outrun some pure sports cars, and get the groceries home at the same time.

Hot air rises.
A radiator next to an intercooler should not be compared to an intercooler on top of an engine.

PS I liked the look of the Subaru at first but now I think the Evo is much more attractive.(Maybe because I shelled out $32000)

Actually, the TMIC on the WRX/STi is on top of the transmission, there is a big opening underneath the intercooler to release air.

skibum - yes hot air rises, however heat radiates, meaning all directions.

EVO Envy.......you should get your facts straight and learn how to read an entire thread before you spout off on one thing that has been said. I already explained the WRC intercooler thing. They started out with a TMIC, that's why I said tradition and that's how it used to be. I had said IIRC the bugeye body style was the first year for the FMIC, but now that I think about it, they went to a FMIC in 97 when they switched to the 2 door.

What's this, oh, a WRC Impreza with a TMIC.

Has anybody gotten the official MSRP of the STI or is it still just up in the air?
