Yeah, I've tried a few times to build one under 45k for what I would want, and it just doesn't work. $50k seems to be where I'm at. On their forum, there is some interesting info. This is not a "go get one" situation, you will be waiting a few months+ for an Atom.
So far, lloks like Washington state has them approved, and I think Oregon. It's going to be a challenge for some states, no windshield is a tough obstacle in a few states dot cert. rules. I would want to drive it on the road, if I got one, so it has to be road legal for me. And, I have inquired to two insurance companies that work in special vehicle insurance, both are declining to insure Atoms at this time.
But, if I did get one, it would be a twin to this beauty.

Well, technically even without the s/c they are quite quick, and the handling/fun factor is still way beyond anything else street legal in this price range. I wouldn't mind a n/a one, it just seems that if you're going to spend this much on a semi-practical toy and wait for it to be custom built, I would want the s/c too.
Again though, it's not like you can go over to the shop and pick one you like. They are built on order, with parts coming from England, which I have read is behind production as well. They are too popular for thier own good, as the staff is limited to a handful of guys, literally just 6 or 7 in England. Six months wait seems normal from the posts.
One could always buy a Caterham Superlight
Mine is street legal -- 1200 lbs with 230 BHP
and that is not even with a tweaked engine...
I believe it finished 2nd after the Atom in Autocar's 0-100-0 test.
