159 ft lbs peak at 7500 rpms. Oh yea, the EVO guys should watch out for that monster.

That car desperately needs forced induction.

I read a recent article on a road test of the new Mazda RX8. It discussed two versions of the car, and indicated a mid 6 second 0-60 for the regular version, and a mid-high 5 second range for the sport version. This puts it in competition with cars like the 350Z, G35 coupe, or even the Neon SRT4.

Personally I like the RX8, and think its cool looking, but as far as being impressed with its performance.... the current version of this car is not a replacement for the lengendary gen 3 RX7 which is a no compromise sports coupe and direct comp for the EVO VIII.

So I think if there's a beating to be had, the EVO's the one that will be handing out the punishment.

The RX-8 is not competition for the EVO.. But the old 3rd gen RX-7 is definatly still gonna be a problem. in a drag race or around some turns..

I just hope enough people buy the RX-8 so a 4th gen RX-7 might come.. Cause, the only reason i bought an evo is cause there is no current RX-7. (assuming the 4th gen follows tradition)

concidering the RX8 is going to start at $26,7XX, there is a lot of things you can do with the extra 3K. Plus the RX8 looks awesome. Its no Evo, but my bro's eclipse GT cost 26k when it was all said and done, so comparing to that....RX8 is right on the money!

If you read the new Road and Track, a full loaded model (which has some things the Evo has) was over $31,000. About the only person who might buy an Rx-8 would be a true sports car buff, a rotarty buff, or someone simply on looks.
It will be very good performance, but will not meet the Evo performance. Its 0-60 and skidpad numbers were lower than the Evo. I guess we would need to see slalom numbers too to truly compare, but I am sure they would come soon.
The good news is that there is lots of fun competition out there with all sorts of different engineering designs.

i was considering it too, i like the look, the suicide doors, and the interior, but its performance is not up to par with the evo. 26k only gets you the slower engine, and not much else.their top of the line is low 30's and still not a big threat to the evo. plus its not awd, which for people who might have to deal with snow, is a negative.

what the rx-8 lacks in performance it makes up for in the interior. i think the rx-8 looks nicer than the evo on the inside, but it won't beat it in performance. It was made to be fast, but not "crazy" fast.

I love the rotory engines and like what they did with the Rx-8 but it's no competition to the Evo.

btw I thought I heard the Mazda will actually be revealing a 4th gen Rx-7 soon.

I think it will handle better than the Evo, thanks to a near perfect 50/50 weight ratio. Can't beat that

there is no way a RX-8 is going to beat a EVO (japan spec) maybe the US spec because of the lower power and no AYC,ACD.
The EVO has been made for the hardest rally all over the world and now it's in 10 make of EVO (don't forget the EVO 6.5 and GTA)It will be very hard to beat from drity old mazda

if they are able to sucessfully give the renesis a turbo...or twin turbo...then things might be alittle differnet...but for now, def the rx8 will not beat the evo

You could go buy a Fox body Mustang for $5K, spend $25K and be running 8s in the 1/4 all day long... The fact of the matter is, for $30K you get a car, with a warranty (watch that warranty go bye bye on the RX8 when you start modding it), that is superior to the RX8 in handling and performance.
