It's alright, but it won't match any of the Evo characteristics at all.
Heres another thread discussing the Mazda RX-8: https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...&highlight=RX8

It's a great car for the money, but I've heard that you have to keep the RPMs high due to the lack of low end torque.

It's an unproven engine as well, we all know the problems the rotary has with some relatively minor abuse, wonder how sturdy the new incarnation is.

Looks great tho, suicide doors are great

Heard the same ... but what if a turbo kit was installed? If possiblle, the price of an RX-8 with a turbo would probably = the $ of the evo. But I'm thinking that I remember something being said about a turbo not being compatable with the new rotary engine ... come someone help me out here?

In the new (I believe it is May edition) Sports Compact Car mag, the RX-8 and even the new 350Z did not handle as well, nor were they as fast as the evo. In this mag I believe that the best 1/4 run for the evo was 13.3 something! 0-60 best was 4.7, with a perfect launch I'm pretty sure.

um, ok a few things.. the RX-8 is not for comparison with the EVO.. different market..

But the new renisis motor will be very reliable.. It is an NA rotary.. Hell the old ones would go easy 150-200K miles..

As for turboing it.. Rotaries with periphrial exhaust ports turbo VERY well, because of the high EGT and flow. The new renisis motor has side exhaust ports.. SO the EGTs are alot lower.. It will be possible to turbo but not nearly as well as older engines..

Mazda is suppose to me making a supercharged version. although nothing is confirmed..

If you want to see a comparable rotary. check out the 3rd gen RX-7.. it will give the evo a run for its money stock.. and with a few mods it should take it on a road course. and probably even the strip.

Yea I have a friend with a '93 modded twin turbo (runs high 11's/low 12's), and another friend with a '95 twin-turbo RX-7 ... he's poured around 80K into it inside & out (NO LIE), and he runs low-mid 11's. I believe last I heard ... he's running about 450hp in that thing!

Actually 11s are possible on the stock twins.. But that is pretty much the limit.. Most run in the 12s with the stock turbos..

My 1st gen should be making ~450RWHP soon and i am expecting low 10s.. but it is a little lighter.. and is better for drag racing..

Motor Trend only got a 14.8 out of one. For 250 horses, im not impressed. Unless that number can drop with some real drivers in there that is!

car and driver and road and track both got 14.5

motor trends accel. numbers seem inflated, they got 6.4 for the 60 while c&d and r&t both got 5.9 and automobile got 6.2
