As far is the Merkur XTR4-I that is a complete different car, they only share the bodystyle being the XTR4-I the first gen.
As far is the engine goes, there are not even related, the MERKUR was fitted with a 2.3l turbo charge and NO intercooler while the Sierra Cosworth all have the 2.0 liter Turbo, Two different engines There is a direct relation among the MERKUR XTR4-I and the mustang turbo 2.3l and the thunderbird 2.3 turbo from the early 80s.
...living in Europe 25 plus years gave me some good background on this cars.

Good stuff UFO. The variety of Sierras makes our dialog very extensive, I am sure you knew what I was trying to say.
I reread your post and it appears I misunderstood your statement, the "sort of" changed the entire meaning of the topic.. My english comprehension is not as good as you might think.
My point is that the Merkur XRT4-I had the 2.3liter turbo No intercooler and the Sierras had the 2.0 turbo, as far is the bodystyle, yes the XRT-4I shares the same bodystyle except the Sierras had BBS honeycomb style rims (first gen).
We are all good. What part of UK do you live?, I lived in Suffolk before.

. I was suprised when I first saw a Merkur here and thought it was a Sierra XR4i. Incidentally, the cops here even drove Sierra XR4is, XR4X4s and Cossies (most cop Cossies I saw were unmarked). They're certainly pretty rare cars here but Sierras were 10 a penny back home.I was born in Edgware, Middlesex and lived there until I was 6 months old and then moved to Manchester where I spent the rest of my years until I moved to the US in '98. Always wanted a Cossie, whether Sierra or Escort, but had company cars since I was in my early twenties so it just didn't seem logical to have 2 cars. My friends, however, owned a few Cossies along RS turbos and some nice grey import STis nd Evos.
UFO,
I am glad to hear. I was about to PM to apologize for the misunderstanding, my english is not too good and at first I did not undertood the "sort of" comment that you made.
While I was in the UK I owned:
Stealth R/T Twin Turbo
Porsche 911(964) Cabriolet 4 cabriolet
Renault 5 GT II turbo
Renault 21 Turbo(fwd, not the quadra)
2 Citroen BX GTIs,
BMW K75 bike
Lexus LX450 SUV
and also a Sierra 1.8 Station wagon
Brought back to the USA the bike and the Lexus LX 450. I had a blast there, I have been in Snetterton racetrack, bentwater RAF and Santa Pod, I love that place. One of my first cars as a teenager was a Renault Super 5 GT II turbo"cup edition" only if you were in Europe in the late 80s really know what I mean.
My best friend on this forum(EVOfunk) got a brand new Ford Fiesta Turbo in 1990, what a blast.. people would have hard time understanding how different the american fiesta and the European fiesta were.
It gives me chills to able able to talk to someone about these cars even today 15-20 years later..

Ford has some really messed up CEO's. The stupid decisions they make on which cars to make, and which cars not to make. Some idiot executive in the 80's decided that the Mustang would be replaced with a 4 cylinder front wheel drive, which ended up being called the Probe (ended up being discontinued), because the amount of protest it created (The Mustang has always been a V-8 RWD). That just one example, but the list is endless. The cars they should bring to market they don't, and the crap they shouldn't produce they do.
