Smile First Car???

Hey guys, I need some help deciding what I should get as a first car... As of now, I've narrowed it down between a 240sx or GSX, both 1998. All I want is a car that can be fast later on with parts that aren't too expensive.. I kinda leaning on the GSX since it has a 4g63 and awd so I can hopefully move onto an Evo later on... They seem to have alot of potential but I heard can be problematic. My plan would be to rebuild the motor with a stroker kit (undecided on what brand), and get a larger turbo (maybe a td05-18/20g or so).

I haven't heard of too many problems from the 240sx side but I think I would turbo the stock motor instead of doing the sr20 swap so I can have more tourqe down low and not have to deal with the issues of a swap... The 240sx would seem like alot more fun since it would be able to do burnouts and drift but I don't think it would be ok for the snow over here..

So what do you guys suggest I get as a first car? I'll be getting my license in March 2007 and want to learn as much as I can about the car before I get it.

-Thanks

I personally prefer the GSX. The bodystyle is very nice and it has the 4G63. The only problem on these cars was the crankwalk but people has been replacing the 6bolt/7bolt engines.
I wouldn't even change nothing unless your engine actually start experiencing the crank walk.

Ultimately I strongly believe that the Eclipse would be more sucessfull for modding it.
I owned the different Eclipse GSX/Lasers and they are very fast with minor mods.

If you decide to get the GSX, plan on getting the upper intercooler pipe as one of your first mods, it gives you a couple of pounds without having to change anything, the stock is a crushed pipe..

My vote goes for the GSX. They are very very hard to find, I was hunting for a GSX 3 months ago and couldn't find one, I ended buying a 94 Stealth R/T TT instead

These are 3 great websites for modding your GSX:

Buschurracing
Extremepsi
Roadraceengineering

Carlos

I would say GSX since it is AWD I believe? It would be cool to get a 240 for the snow..dunno if you know what its like in the snow but its ****ing great but seriously go with GSX and thakns for not posting a thread asking:

Well I have a 99 GS-T and they are nice cars. Some can be problematic and are costly to fix. Since it will be rather old you will most likely have to replace some parts. Also be sure to thoroughly inspect any car before you purchase it.

Thanks for your help, I guess I'm going to be aiming for the gsx. After all, drifting and burnouts in the 240 is only going to waste the tires and tires cost money... I don't really mind the problems the gsx will have but I do hope I will be able to deal with them myself.

- Thanks alot!

Well if you're going to get winter tyres those also cost money. 240's are abundant in parts and aftermarket parts...so are Eclipses'.

But both these cars are old and if you want something that you dont want to replace....like parts...get a brand new car..

240's are fun...but so is everycar when modded

I donno now I'm like 60/40 leaning towards the gsx... The only problem I have is the 240 being rwd and during the winter I have to drive about 20 miles to school on the highway and everything.. I like the Kouki 240's but I also like the look of the gsx with a nice fmic in the stock bumper... The thing that is turning me away from the gsx is the dreaded crankwalk.

But anyways, what cars do the red top, black top, and blue top come from? I'm confused whether the redtop comes from the s13's while the blacktop comes from the s14's and is the bluetop from the pulsar gti-r? Those are the only cars I am aware of having the sr20.. But it doesn't really matter since if I'm getting the 240 I won't be doing the swap... Another thing that both turns me on and off from the 240 is how common they are.. They are easy and cheap to buy but alot of people have them... ughh I can't make up my mind!

Yeah, the first thing I was planning to do was replacing most of the gaskets and rubber hoses on it if I got one.

I'm biased because I HATE RWD cars... okay it was fun when I learned how to drive, but snow and gravel SUCKS! It is most funny with just the perfect snow and barely even an incline how RWD cars can get stuck even with proper tires.

That isn't saying that it's impossible.

I've also owned like 5 DSMs all AWD. Tuning FWD cars are fun too, but not for drag racing! In NJ should be easy enough to find a GSX... heck, here in BOSTON there are tons going for CHEAP, many with 6 bolt swaps. Will it break down on you? Perhaps, but then again, if you know how to fix it, it may be nothing. 240's are pretty cool, but I never liked the few that I was in, turboed or not.

GSX = AWD = the roxorz! Seriously.. AWD is very nice for snow, if not FWD, but RWD is pretty bad. GSX is also very easy to mod, going almost stock can get you close to 200awhp and then of course starts the addiction....
