Isuzu Debuts Direct Injection Gasoline Engine

I saw this at Ward's AutoWorld. It gives me hope that will bring its GDI technology to the U.S. soon.

April 22, 2003

American Isuzu Motors Inc. announced a new engine technology at the 2003 New York International Auto Show — the first direct-injection gasoline engine available in a U.S.-market SUV. This new engine will be standard on the 2004 Isuzu Axiom and optional on the 2004 Isuzu Rodeo.

The direct-injection gasoline engine uses less fuel in the city and on the highway, generates more horsepower and more torque, and produces fewer emissions — all on regular, unleaded gasoline — compared to its conventional fuel injection predecessor, the company said in a statement.
The only other vehicles on sale in the United States to offer direct-injection gasoline engines are the $116,495 BMW 760Li and the Rolls-Royce Phantom, expected to be priced well above $300,000. By contrast, Isuzu says it will be the only company to offer a direct-injection gasoline engine in a vehicle of any kind available in America priced under $100,000.

I find it shocking that Isuzu still believe they will be around in 2004.

Not newer ones. The company took a huge dive in the U.S. in 2001. I haven't seen the 02' numbers but they can't be any better.

Interesting to note that Isuzu was the ONLY manufacturer not to have a display at the 2003 Minneapolis/St Paul auto show.

In 1999 Isuzu moved 100,000 units in the U.S. with 600+ dealers. Today they have about 475 dealers and expect the number to drop to around 250 dealers while at the same time they are excited about the prospect of selling 36,000 units per year.

That's just not healthy.
