Thumbs down For the record

The Lancer commercials are the worst commercials ever made. What the hell target audience did they have in mind? 16y/o girls?

...Sorry to any fans, but don't even get me started on BNL.

Can we at least get ONE Lancer commercial that doesn't imply that only limp-wristed gen x'ers and young girls drive the Lancer?

The RS has commercials? I've only seen 'em for the Rex.

Same here.

And yeah, the commercial thing was a joke, but they really do blow. By far the worst commercial out now for any car.

Refresh my memory. Was it 60-80% projected sales to women on the lancer or am I mistaken?

hood scoop vs none
ugly plastic side skirts vs body colored rocker panels
dual tip exhaust vs single tip
wrx badging vs rs badging

As a writer for an advertising agency I'll chime in with my .02.....

Most commercials are BAD. It's the nature of the business. Since it's a very subjective business, a lot of untalented people can get away with making bad commercials. They complain about the client like everyone else, they'll just stay at bad agencies because they don't have what it takes to work at a good one. There is also the client, which usually demands bad work.

Here are the car companies that have good agencies doing work for them, so the POTENTIAL exists for a good commercial to happen if the planets align.

Porsche. Their print is VERY good. Haven't seen any TV in a while.

Kia. A great agency with a very difficult client. They make decent commercials where they're pigeonholed into talking about features.

Saturn. Just got a new agency. They should be doing some good/hopefully funny stuff soon. Their present spots for the Vue were done by another agency, but the concept is good (At home in any environment).

The new Mini has a good agency doing their work. We'll see how the commercials are.

BMW. Don't know about the ads for the new 7 series, but the 5 series BMWfilms on the internet were awesome. Their print work is usually pretty good too.

Hyundai. Decent ads, they're getting a new agency though. We'll see what happens.

Toyota. Just started doing some great work. We'll see if this continues. Anyone see the Celica commercials? "Looks fast." Those were awesome.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I may have missed some. You may not agree with what I listed. Remember, this business is subjective, but most good ads have a concept behind them. Unfortunately, most car ads are just product presentation, with a crappy jingle to go along with.

I totally agree with you - especially the BMW movies were amazing and might the best commercials ever for a product of its kind. But nobody said they are all bad and there are for sure good commercials out there for cars.
Here, we just want to figure out the worst of the bunch. any suggestions?

Do any of you remember that "I luuuuvvvveee you, mannnnn" commercial? That's cool...

Porsche. Their print is VERY good. Haven't seen any TV in a while.
That boxster S commercial with that "man in coma for 50 years" drives a 959 is not bad.

Most recent print ad for a Porsche Targa:

Every once in a while, sunlight finds its 860 million mile journey worthwhile.

THat, my friends, is a great headline.

You want ads that suck? Mazda. Zoom, zoom, zoom? Sorry, just flipped the channel. Chevy trucks. Like a big fat turd. Anything with a Ford in it. Not a big fan of Acura. You may not like the Lancer commercials, but at least the music is good (read no zoom, zoom, zoom). And the Eclipse commercials are good. The one where the girl gets picked up for a date, and she goes outside and stands next to the Mitsubishi, but his is the car behind it? That's funny.

I can't believe I forgot Volkswagon. Their ads are very smart, and funny too.

General Motors cars stink almost as much as their ads.

Ok, that's my .02 for the day.
