2002-3 M3 or 2004-5 S4

Which one would most of you get? Modding would def be a possibility so for that reason alone I was leaning towards the S4.
I am confused however, I read on consumerreports just for fun about both of them, and it says that the S4 barley outhandles the A4s, etc. Which was odd after seeing the Top Gear episode talking about how the S4 is sticking its head out in the middle of the STI vs Evo fight....

Thanks a lot guys.

I thought E46 M3's started in 2003?

Anyway, you would be VERY dissapointed with the new S4, they are disgustingly sad, i hate them. They are simply an A4 with bad gas mileage at this point. They look like an A4, handle like one, and are barely faster then one. And no they are not modable.

Get the twin turbo v6 S4 or an E46 M3 if anything.

Sorry I don't know much about the S4 or M3 engines, how do I know which M3s are E46?
Also, which years and how do I find the TT V6 S4? You arent talking about the RS4 are you?

Thanks a lot, sorry for being such a n00b.

I voted M3. It's more sportscar than the heavy luxo-wannabe S4. The E46 chassis run was 2001-2006 …

The 2000-2002 S4's are the biturbo. I have one, they are expensive as hell to mod. Although, if you're interested I'll be more than happy to sell you mine!

I voted Bimmer strictly on looks plus the M3's are killer performance wise anyway.

I think they're both in the same boat as far as modding...both big money for questionable gains, until you go full bore (turbo kit for S4, supercharger for M3).

If your planning on modding it then M3 all the way...I prefer the S4 over the M3 for everything else but racing...I like the feel of the audi better than the M3 but everyone has different tastes and style.... the B5 00-01 Bi-Turbo S4 are sick as hell though to mod...Ran into a modded that had like 420hp on pump gas... Lets just say it make me wish I had more mods on my car.

How modable is the M3, and are all the M3s from 01 the E46??

Thanks a bunch guys!
I knew it would be good to ask the Evo community cause they are into the same cars that I am

Depends on what you mean by "modable." I'm assuming that cost is a concern for you.

If you're looking for a stylish car that is good for the occasional track day, I'd go for the M3. Get the brakes upgraded, do a couple of suspension mods and it's a very capable car. The E46 M3 (2001-2006) is one of the best looking BMWs in my opinion.

In terms of power mods, neither the S4 nor the M3 will be cheap. Parts are expensive, and you'll be looking at $1,500 at least for a decent exhaust setup, just to give you an idea of the costs involved with modding European cars. For any significant increases in power, you'll be looking at upwards of $8k for a supercharger/turbo kit.

If you want to mod for power, look into the C32 AMG. It's much easier to mod, and both Renntech and Kleemann offer power packages that will bump your HP up to around 400.

Cdog, thats bad news!

I am not looking to mod hardcore, but I do want to spend a couple grand on some mods, I don't know about 8k but overtime I would like to invest a couple G's into whichever car I get.
I was going for the Evo for a couple years now and still might get it, but luxury and all the bumps I experience here in L.A including the fact that new rims with thin tires is what makes me like the EVOs looks I dont want my **** denting 24/7 so it seems the Evo might be a little impractical for me.

One reason I wanted the S4 over the M3 is that it is also a 4door like the Evo, and the M3 isnt obviously.
Again i've asked before, but no answer really, is every M3 made from 2001-2006 a E46?

Also about the C32, I really dont like the look of mercedes, especially old ones, so I am def not looking to get a car solely for my mod capabilities, but I appreciate you suggesting other cars that I might not be aware of.

Thanks all!

Naor

stock for stock the m3 will out accelerate and out handle one. it's not even a comparison...

the m3 is also much more fun to drive. it feels much more involving IMHO.

b6 s4 is quite dissappointing. the b5 with v6tt is capable of big power but it's expensive to mod as mentioned.

i voted m3 btw.

edit: m3 is not very moddable...the engine's pretty maxxed out from the factory...mods are quite expensive for little gain.

check some bimmer boards and audi boards...do researches on both cars and then most importantly drive both back to back and there u'll have ur decision

Thanks for the input,
I wish both were a little bit more moddable, it seems that the M3 outperforms the S4 for sure Stock vs Stock, I found some good comparisons researching, now modding is an issue, if only the Evo was a little more luxurious!

I still might end up with the Evo, we will see.

It seems like the M3 was significantly faster than the S4 though, and as everyone says the only model of S4 worth mentioning is the TT which I think has a pretty ugly body style compared to the E46 M3 by FAR.

For either car, I would be looking to get pretty much all bolt ons, then maybe a small turbo upgrade.
I am guessing that will run be 8k+ as I've been told.
