Not bad for an underachiever.

What happened to the R36?
I was on the waiting list for the first R32 in town for six months before I came to my senses and bought an Evo back in '03. It was disappointing that VW introduced the R32 in the US without HID's and a higher than Euro-spec ride height. Still, it would certainly make an excellent daily driver.

The exhaust note on the R is to die for. I love how the butterfly valve opens at like 3500 rpm or at whatever speed but the car lacked crazy power. Still love the car but I love turbo power more. And from what I heard, the problem with the R36 wasn't getting the engine to fit, it was getting a tranny that could handle the torque to fit. I will give the Passat R36 a whirl when it becomes available but will probably end up settling on a 335i if my girl doesn't get one first.

The only thing they have going for them is their resale value.
As for VWs sucking, I have to disagree. I had a 2002 GTI 1.8T and it was a great car. It just wasn't as fast as I would've preferred it to be, and it was crippled by FWD. Other than that, it never left me stranded or anything else. I thought it was a good, quality automobile. 51,000 miles, trouble free.
R32 is a pretty car.. great sounding motor and exhaust.
Awesome interior...
they hold their resale value very well due to the limited amount made...i have a friend he just bought an 04 with 36k for $26k...
that is a vw i would own in a heart beat...not an evo killer...but a great daily driver

the r32 is a nice car... i consider it like a baby m3....
has a super nice interior, put together nicely, nice motor (wasn't made to beat everycar ont he road) handling was sick, brakes were sick, comfortable, from a roll they are quicker in stock form, they cant use the awd excuse since its basically a switch..
the price was right... my friend got one for 26 kept it for a year sold it for 29.
point is anyone who bought one from the dealer, if they didnt pay any markup, theyre not gonna lose any money and theyre gonna enjoy the car.

I really liked my GTI, and there are a lot of things that I miss about it; versatility being one of them, and the super-nice interior being the other. It really was a great car, but it just wouldn't have ever been the car that I really wanted it to be. I would most definitely recommend another one to anyone that I know that would be out looking for a semi-sporty and practical daily driver.
Why in the heck were those cars so freaking expensive? I looked at one before purchasing my Evo back in 04 and was shocked at the price. I use to love VW's (owned a total of five over the years) but I just couldn't justify paying 30k+ for a golf with neat seats, awd, and crappy performance. If I remember correctly I found a couple of Infinity G35's in the same price range as the R32 at that time.....crazy yuppies-lol
