A car that parks itself?

Hey guys i was watching TV last night and a commercial for Lexus came on and it said that the new LS parks itself! Has anyone seen this commercial? Can anyone expand on this? If this is real then technology is getting rediculous!

in the commercial if you read the small lettering you can see it says that the driver still has to use the brake. So i am trying to figure out how this is going to work

I just checked out the demo on the Lexus website. Go the the website, http://www.lexus.com/models/LS/features/exterior.html, and click on Advanced Parking Guidance System for the demo.

All the driver has to do is toggle a few switches on the Nav screen to select the parking spot, and the car will steer itself. All you have to do is step on the brakes to stop the car after it is parked.

I'm curious if it works well on tighter parking spaces, and if the car can detect if the particular parking spot is too small? Still, this is a huge step foward, and I'm surprised that Lexus actually beat Mercedes to it.

From what I've heard, the one in the LS460 has the most advanced "self-parking" technology.

If this thing can parallel park THEN I'll be impressed heh. Untill then I worry about the type of driver that uses this feature (I'm imagining grandma) and wonder if trusting them to only "apply the brake" is trusting them to do too much.

i heard the EVO X will be self driven.. you dont even get to drive it.. You buy it, show it to its garage (your home, you fuel it up) and whenever it wants it just goes out driving looking for races!!!!

On the real side though, ive seen the commercial about 30 times and get more and more curious each time.. Cant wait to act like im going to buy one so they let me try it out..

Yup, I've seen that ad before. It's amazing. It would be a great benefit for disabled and elderly people.

However, I can only imagine the day I can afford to purchase it and be that lazy!

Someday, it'll be just like in the movies when cars can drive themselves on autopilot to take us to our destinations.

Yes the car is literally capable of parallel parking itself. Amazing technology has been put into this car and it will be ahead of its time for a bit I think on the tech side. It may even finally best the S class and 7 series even in desirability.

Soon parallel parking will be a lost skill.

It's a lost skill even today. You can fail the parrallel parking portion of your driving test and still get a license.

I see so many horribly parked cars (even in regular shopping mall parking lots) that I wonder how in the world they managed to get there without crashing into something. Can't park a car at <5mph but they get a license to drive at 60+ mph with other cars less than 5 feet away from you doing the same speed. It amazes me.

That Lexus self parking thing is cool, but imagine the $$ to fix the system even in a small fender bender. That'll be one expensive car to insure.
