One of the guys I work with is getting rid of his 1993 honda del sol S (1.5) with 200,000 miles on the ticker.

I am thinking about buying it from him a use this as my beater car...

-The car needs a clutch (which he will be including a new clutch and flywheel for free (never had the time to install)
-needs a vss as the spedo/tach dosent work
-a paint job as the clear coat is startig to come off

-has brand new pads and rotors
-new tires
-new water pump
-new starter
-regurlar maint has always been done
-new timing belt and all other belts

He is only asking like 500-700 for it which is really hard to pass up...

Just thought I would see what you guys think that might have more experience with high mileage used car buys...

i have known alot of honda's to be used as daily drivers and they work out just fine. If it seems to be running good i would say its well worth it

yeh. for that price... even if it does you could sell it for parts possibly and get a lil out of it.

Though that 1.5 D-series is gutless, it'll still last a while longer and still be easy on the gas gauge... Definitely pick it up at that price! I got my '92 Civic hb for 1800, but it has a swapped D-series Si. The "Sols" are still fun cars!

Yea my first car was a sol and they are just cool cars. Removable top and rear window that goes down.

The car runs great, puts a bunch of black residu on the bumper but I believe that is a bad pcv valve from what I have been reading on other high mileage hondas...

They look like roller skates!

Honda beaters are usually reliable and easy on the gas and considering all those new parts that went into the car, it's definitely a steal for so little $. Go with it!

Just found out that the front cv boots are torn as well. So I will plan on replacing the axels as well as just replacing he cv boots is more time consuming and usually more expensive than just replacing the axels...

The rims are in good condition, they are the stock 15" chrome rims from honda but the chrome is chipping...so eventually they will need to be replaced to ensure they dont leak air...

I have 93 with 50,000 original miles on it. It's great on gas and handles well because of the short weheel base ( almost impossible for the rear end to come out from under you). One big problem is the roof leaks. This is more than just annoying. Also, the thing is so small it's dangerous. You can't see around SUV's. Get in an accident in it and you don't have much protection. If you get it I highly recommend getting a set of front and rear strut mount braces off Ebay.

I had this car when it first came out and I agree about the roof leak when it rains being annoying, they never could fix it and its why they quit making them, it will drip right onto your left leg hehe. The car also has huge understeer so dont try any evo moves in it other than that I enjoyed it as a dailty driver.

The "del Sol" was considered one of Honda's few failures. It is not as reliable as most Honda's are, be warned. It came out as a hasty rebuttal to the Mazda Miata, but it was neither as nimble or bullet proof.

That being said.... that sounds like a decent price for the del Sol. However if you are willing to ante up a little bit more, just get the Mazda.
