I just finished driving the m3 w/smg for a week. I'd say if you drive in a lot of traffic it makes sense. Otherwise go with the stick.

The smg is hard to drive smooth. The term m3 owners use is it "kangaroos." My bro says the new smg on the new m3 is supposed to be infinitely better.

Aside from the kangaroo'ing, shift to shift its still a bit rough. You can change the clutch sensitivity but it doesn't really matter.

Finally the launch control is ok but only lets you rev to 2k before dumping. The euro model lets you rev way way above that but is limited to x number of times/month.

At the track (not drag) I'd guess the smg's a bit slower than the regular, especially b/c its harder to drive smoothly.

ohh and as to the m3, I love it. Heavy car but tight package. The convertible I was tooling around in with the top down was quieter on the freeway at 80 mph than my evo.

Definitely M3>evo as a daily driver.

Yes I also Thought of Sub-machine gun when i read SMG.

But Moving on to answer the topic, I havent Driven or even ridded in an SMG M3, but I probaly would preffer a manual car with a clutch, just because i like driving manual. Although SMG is better ( I am admitting that yes a computer can shift better than me). But its up to you, do you like standard transmission or The SMG, If you are Gonna be like a Hardcore racer I would say SMG, if its your weekend car its alll personal prefrence. My Prefrence is manual.

Traffic = SMG. I've had the opportunity to drive both the standard 6 speed and the SMG and I have to say being in traffic without giving my left leg a workout was nice.

SMG, figure you're not buying it or speed or else you would've kept the Evo.

For a track car, I'd go with the SMG. There's no beating it on the downshifts and it'll allow you to concentrate on your line. I've also read that the latest generation shifts much better than the previous.

For a daily, I think I'd prefer the manual as it's more involving.

SMG ownz for track use, and traffic too I guess. It is very easy to drive SMG smoothly, just takes getting used to. Some people never realize that if you let off the gas it'll shift like butter Personally, I dont mind the non-smoothness, and it really does cut down lap time with distance.
