600rr's are fine, nice bikes... F4i's are for pussies/starters. Everybody knows it, you just need to get out of denial because you own one.
Anyway, the new GSX-R's are beautiful bikes. If you're going new... I know the Suzuki guys like the old ugly cyclopse gixxer's, but everybody else thinks they're ugly.
HEY WAIT, OP, my 2003 R6 is for sale, only $4000! Perfect starter bike! PM me for pics & info!

Back on topic. You're fine starting off with a 600 middle weight sport bike. Just please make sure to take your local MSF class for beginners. Not only is it fun but its the easiest way to pass the test.
Oh yea, also, when you buy a sportbike. I'd recommend the GSXR series purely because they come stock with a slight steering damper, but they also have the highest resell value (everybody loves a gixxer.) The R6 is a very nice riding bike and VERY comfortable. The 600rr is the easiest to operate but the seat feels like plank of wood. The ninjas are right up there as well, but show the poorest resell value (and the digi tach is just awkward in the day time.)

1) It's gonna fall.
2) You might not actually like cycles.
3) Power/Weight Ratio
4) 500CC bikes are peppy enough that you can still do alot with them.
5) Cost effective.
I'd suggest a used bike, preferably something old.
Also, depending on your height. I personally prefer Kaw's - but that's because I am so lanky. I find that Honda's can be rather restricting. Yams are good for lanky people as well.
haha yeah, A turbo charged, Nitrous fed busa....that should be a good learner. haha j/k Everyone else already said anything else I woulda said. I have owned bikes since I was 16 and would never get caught without one again. I would sell my cars before my bikes anyday of the week.....
You are very vague on your description. Just about any pasionate biker would tell you that riding their bikes are fun, after all you are just looking for "fun" right?
I have had many bikes, I have been a spoiled ba$tard all my life (no anymore) so I had basicly bikes since I was 14. I currently ride a BMW 650GS, this is indeed one of my favorite bikes, it is a dual sport and you can go off road and on road.
Street bikes are no longer catchy for me for many reasons,if I were to have one I would be riding it top speed the first day and that would get me into trouble very fast. Secondly, in the world of street Bikes there are just too many Street bikes out there that outrun you. The street bikes change very fast and your newest bike is no longer the "cream of the cob".
I hope you have your MSF already. They currently have the beginners, intermediate and experience course, I recommend you take all 3.
If I were you I would consider a dual sport like mine, you can go on or off road and they are still quick and very versatil. As far is reliability, well, everyone that owns a bike is going to tell you that their bikes are the best and what not. I would off course recommend BMW but any other Japanese, Italian or british bike would also be a good manufacturer choice.
my .2c

I started on a Katana 600..great bike to learn on. Otherwise I would suggest the F4i's, the CBR F2 or F3, or the kawi ninja 500R. Buy something to learn on and than move up. Tim started on a Suzuki RF 600,than moved up to the Yami R6 and than the R1.

ok first off...
"yeah AT LEAST get a 600 if you buy anything less itll be a waste of money because in a month of riding it you will be bored i started on a 2004 gsxr 600
and its all the bike i needed no prob keeping up with my buddies on there 1000
and it wheelies just the same (if thats what youre into)
just respect it fear it and never show off for girls ive seen some bad things happen haha"
Is exactly correct! My 1st bike was a used 2000 r6.. Ive never ridden a dirtbike in my life.. If you know how a clutch works and respect the power until you have some experience under your belt..
Katana or as we call Can -O-Tuna's are the heaviest bikes made! Stay away from this bike! Get a used 600cc and LEARN.. Go to an empty parking lot one day gear up and ride it.. Buy something that you wont be scared to drop.. (Chromed out custom painted show winner) Get a set of sliders.. Best $30-$50 on ebay youll ever spend.. My friend jumped off his bike doing a 10mph burnout and it didnt even break his blinker!
Next take a riders course if you can and is available for you.. Worth the money.. and youll be glad you have a 600cc not a glorified moped!
Take it easy and dont try to be a hero
I have had the same R6 for 3 years now and Ive never dropped it.. Nor do I need any more power!
And mine has a custom paint job, and everything chrome from frame, swingarm, wheels, forks and everything inbetween the day i bought it .. Never been down.. And now im doing stupid stuff like this .........
Wear a helmet, jacket and gloves at all times!!!!

Ducati Monster 620 (used) or the Ducati Monster 695 (updated model, new or used). They look good, no fairings to break when you drop the bike, light, lots of aftermarket support and they sound great. And they're less expensive than the latest crop of 600cc superbikes. Get a set of crash bungs and you're good to go. Power isn't overwhelming and it has a low seat height and comfy riding position. You'll probably be able to sell it for pretty close to what you bought it for if you get a used one and anything Ducati is a chick magnet. They're both pretty darn reliable too and maintenance isn't any more expensive than a JDM bike.
