Think about insurance! Some street bikes are several hundred dollars a month! Especially if you a financing....

I really dislike when people say that a bike is TOO powerful for someone. My very first bike was a 2003 R1. I never dropped it and never wrecked it. The bike is dependent on the driver. If you're a dumbass who likes speed and isn't willing to learn how to be a good rider, you'll cause problems. But if you are responsible, know your limits and ride defensively you will be fine on any bike.

My suggestion is to take the safety course first (complete waste of time but it gives you the basics) and then go to a few dealerships and sit on bikes. See what fits you and makes you feel comfy. Find a few friends with bikes to let you sit on theirs or even see if they will let you ride.

Knowlege is much greater than opinion.

I remember when I started riding. Everyone told me to get something small like all of these people are saying.

DONT do it. I bought a 2003 R6 and hated it at first, then when I got some more experience, I loved it. I remember the first day I got it, I asked myself what I had gotten into and I thought about selling it, only because I didnt have enough experience to actually have fun on it yet.

My friend started out on a 2003 R1, were are both alive to this day, and have never laid any of our bikes down.

I have had an 03 R6, then I moved up to a 06 GSXR 1000. The 1000 was an absolute animal.

Goodluck!

I got a great deal on a Ducati 748 for my first (and only) bike. I found the relatively low power, lower than average seat height, and the stability of the v twin motor all perfect for my first bike.

Of course I took safety courses and had experience with dirt bikes previously.

im 19 and the first bike i rode was an 05 R1 with LeoVince exhaust on it. the thing was an animal but i know how to handle it because i get to play with them all day (i work at a yamaha shop)

after riding the R1 for a while i decided that i dont really like the street bike thing, so i bought myself a 05 Yamaha Roadstar Warrior.

everyone thinks that "oh its a cruiser, its got nothing" the thing is a blast to ride and its extremely loud, which i love. when you get a bike remember...

LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES if they cant see you, they need to hear you.

I'll add that almost any bike is a fine first bike if you have self control. I had two friends who both bought new GSXR 1000's for first bikes. One of them wrecked, one of them has still kept the shiny side up, so you need to ask yourself if you're responsible enough.

Oh, and "Loud Pipes Saves Lives" is a proven myth. Have at Google with that one. If you place yourself in a situation where they need to hear you for you to be safe, you are not riding responsibly.

when spliting lanes in traffic, you need to be loud enough for people to know youre there otherwise you get cut off a lot.

Q.E.D.

But if that's not enough for you, there is science to discredit you as well. Since you've stated that your dangers are ahead of you and your exhaust is going to save you by them hearing, the sound wave from your exhaust must first reach them. Consider you are both moving forward and the sound waves are emanated backward. First, you'll do an awesome job pissing off people behind you since they are the reflective medium. Second, considering doppler effect, ambient noise, etc. by the time soccer mom hears your loud pipes you're in her blind spot, scare the crap out her and actually get her to drive worse. The science of how a wave propagates through the medium shows how loud pipes save lives is a myth. Once again, I encourage you to Google everything.
