Exclamation DAS - 2008 Ford Focus

If you've been following our pre-Detroit show coverage, you'll have noticed that Ford likes to use its home turf to introduce new production cars and unveil concepts. Unfortunately, the facelifted 2008 Focus is the least impressive of the new offerings from Dearborn, particularly in contrast to exciting concepts like the Interceptor.

When the Focus was introduced in 1999, it was at the cutting edge, at least stylistically, debuting as one of the most striking small cars on the market. It got a minor facelift a few years later, more evolutionary than revolutionary. While the 2008 update looks substantially different, it's still not a complete overhaul, just another facelift.

For 2008 the Focus ditches the wagon and gains a two-door coupe in addition to the standard four-door sedan. The exterior is completely restyled, shedding over 60 pounds in weight, reducing the drag coefficient and noise inside the cabin. While it gets a new brake package, the rear brakes are still drums. Leather trim in the interior with contrasting stitching is a unique feature particularly in this segment, as is the new "ambient lighting" option that gives you the choice of seven colors to highlight the interior.

Unfortunately, Ford's missed the mark in the styling department. Part of the new design includes the corporate bar-grille (that's a styling element, not a restaurant), a higher beltline, flared wheel arches and a "character line" cutting from an air vent behind the front wheel to the rear and across the trunk lid. While there are certainly some striking design elements to the new Focus, we believe strongly in the notion that a car design is more than the sum of its parts, and that's where the 2008 Focus falls short.

My take: I do not like it all. Ford should just stop updating this old pile of crap and just give us the european version of the focus. Why must you make us wait till 2009? Blah. The interior pretty cool, but exterior screams "". Very weak offering from ford.

I dont think the front looks too bad. I also think they did a nice job on the interior. Unfortunately though, this generation of people can not live in the grey area, much like the generations before. The difference is previous generations of people would only buy American cars, now it seems most of us will only buy Japanese, discrediting even worthwhile attempts by domestic brands.

My point, compare this to the Dodge Caliber or Chevy Cobalt (non-SS). I dont think its all that bad. At least its polarizing, as opposed to a generic non styled piece.

Do I think Ford can turn themselves around and release decent product? Yes. Do i think anyone will care? No. And thats a shame. See, its sales of cars like these that allow car companies to fund high performance versions of cars and other special one-off vehicles. Thats why I tell Mitsu fans to spread the word on Outlanders and the new Lancer. Sales of those cars allow Mitsu to finance future Evo development.

(Yes I understand this is still based on the first gen chassis of the Focus, while Europe is on what, ver 2 or ver. 3? You all know though if they make this vehicle ride more comfortably and quiter than the current Focus, the average buyer will be happy buying a completely new "looking" car. It would have been better to introduce a newer Focus chassis, but they made their choice. Style is what we are debating here, and like I said at least they tried something different and a bit unique.)

Nice interior, and the 2 door coupe is a very good idea. It'd be even better if they'd pair it with a larger high-output (170+ hp) 4 cyl. engine, similar to the old SVT focus.

The front end is hideous.

EDIT: Here's a better idea. Drop that new Ford engine in there, the 400 hp twin-turbo V6.
