I was wondering if anyone had experience with the E36 engine and was wondering what are the best starting performance mods?

 

Jim Conforti chip. There is a guys here in Utah that specializes in E36 Parts. Makes Turbo, Intake Manifolds, does fantastic work. CAI will also add quite a bit of power. My Dad had an E36 and the ECU made a large difference.

 

I drive an E39 M5 with Dinan software, if you can afford it.

the best mod for an e36 M3 is to drive it to the dealer and trade it for an E46

 

Overweight. The E36 with some more power and less weight defines what an M3 should be a lot more than the E46 does.
