How are 3000GTs?
i've been looking at the 3000GT and wnat to ask what the car is about, never really looked into it. I heard its based from the Dodge Stealth, if it is, then i hate it? does anyone have it , hows reliability, othe overall impression of it?
You heard completely wrong, the Dodge Stealth was a marketing agreement. Mitsubishi provided 98% of the parts and Dodge touched it cosmethically to sell the Dodge Stealth in the USA just the same way they did in the mid 80s with the Mitsubishi Starion (Chrysler Conquest), Mitsubishi Eclipse (Plymouth Laser), Mitsubishi Mirage(Plymouth colt-Dodge Colt) and so and so.

I agree with you but I still ran 1/10th faster times on the 1/4 mile bone stock with my 94 Stealth R/T twin turbo(112000 miles) that I ever did with my Evo 9 and Evo 8. Part of that was the stupid fail safe switch on the Evos.
My Dodge weight 3752lbs with no gas and no spare tire so roughly 4000lbs fully loaded on gas and spare tire.

I agree to disagree I guess. I mean I have heard off stock 9s running high 12's but most dont do it. Just like most VR4's I have seen barely get below a 13.5, not saying they cant though. On average an evo is about 2-3 10ths faster from what I have seen. I also now the early 90s 5sp ones were only a high 13 sec car but not sure about a 94...car just never really caught me eye as a good performance car.

i ran a 13.0 stock on my IX my cousin had 2 VR4s and they handle nice (thanks to weight) but didnt feel fast to me...
Why? his input is not needed.. he already knows his car wont handle as well as ours or be as fast in any other aspect. not saying they are garbage to be a jerk, but mitsubishi knew they were not going to compete with the RX7 and Supra... it was similar to the 300ZX only thanks to weight.. only the 98-99 bodystyle looks cool anyways, and people ask WAY to much for them... (as well as the 93-97 supras rx7's and recently i have noticed the prices of 97-99 GSX's going up )
direct him to a scale so he can give us an accurate number rather than everyone guessing.

from personal experience (I had a 1991 3000gt vr4), they are really great cars. yea they are super heavy compared to most cars now days, but they are also fully loaded with every high tech gadget you can ask for (well at least for the day they were).
they can easily be boosted upwards of 500 hp and with the right suspension setup will easily handle just as well as any evo. they are also lower and have a wider track.
and if your really picky about how heavy they are. then get a non turbo model (SL for 3000gt's and base,r ES or RT for stealth's), and just swap in a turbo motor and run a nice big single turbo setup. the non turbo cars are only about 3200 lbs (same as an evo). and also from experience they can be hella fast with that setup.
another tip for wieght... remove the factory leather seats (turbo models) they are about 65 lbs each. also the active aero system and its components will save you another 100 lbs easy. and then the wheels and tires. the factory rollers are not light. some nice aftermarket rims will save you an easy 40lbs. then proceed with simple stuff like exhaust system, intake, blah blah blah. you can get 400hp with the stock turbos, and it will run mid 12's without even breathing hard (even lower if you can launch well).

SL are still 3500lbs not 3200. And swapping a twin turbo motor in that car will still make it fwd and useless with all that torque. They were never that popular and were plagued with transfer case problems. Also the motors werent that great either...ever wonder why half of them you see for sale say just replaced motor at 100k. Not hating on the car, just bringing to the guys attention that they were not that great of a car...especially for what people want for them.
I love my 3000gt. Its definitely a different car then the EVO. The evo definitely handles better and you can feel the weight difference but the 3000gt feels a lot better for daily driving. And as supermac says most of the weight comes from all the luxury stuff the vr-4 comes with. Like The seats,rims,hood, are heavy as ****. Can easily drop some lbs off the car and you'll be in the 12's stock (if you can drive of course)
As far as reliability each car has its own problems. If you're thinking about getting a vr-4 then i would at least get a 2nd gen as they have the least amount of problems and they come with more HP stock. The engine is pretty stout too. Guys are pullling 9s on the stock bottom end.
