Also.... be sure to wear the protective gear. ESPECIALLY a lid. I wear my lid EVERYTIME I am out on my bike as well as the majority of the rest of the guys I ride with. It is nice to ride without a helmet BUT I dont cant weigh the factors together of going without one.

There are a few guys I ride with who are some of the craziest guys on 2 wheels that you will ever see and they dont wear helmets or any other safety gear except some thin motocross gloves. They like the bandanna's and safety glasses I guess for the "cool guy" look. I personally think the safety gear out now looks bad ***.

I have a nice comfortable lid, alpinestars leather jacket (for cooler weather), ICON textile jacket (for warmer weather) and a pair of nice thick leather ICON gloves. I wouldnt ride any other way. Im comfortable in the stuff.

You dont have to ride without gear to look cool. Just think about it this way..... If there was an accident, you didnt have any gear on and you did survive how cool do you think you would look?

Ive seen wrecks first hand and have lost riding buddies due to dumb stuff. If you're going to ride ride smart!

Just food for thought.

I used to ride all the time. But it got old real quick from having a near death experience everytime u ride in traffic.

Cars are now more dangerous than ever with cell phones, dvd players, and xbox's distracing drivers from seeing u on the road.

Thats why i got the evo so i dont have the need for a bike. U can get all the adrenalin u want with boost!

Or you can pull ben roethlisberger and split your wig on a hayabusa

gear is so crucial to saving your life. In the MSF course they teach you how certain fabrics will hold up in case of falling off the bike at lets say 60mph, and I remember denim being about 4ft before your skin is the only thing sliding. gear gear gear. Buschur should make stuff for bikes, especially for old rockets like mine

Hey Jrod, watch out with that ICON stuff. A lot of people have warned me about their poor quality. Check the tags on your gear, some of their stuff say's "not for street use". I don't know about you but i wouldn't buy anything from a company who makes protective gear with a tag that say's not for street use. Just my .02.

this is a great post for me as well. I'm looking into getting an R6 this week and taking a riding course next weekend. It is going to be my first bike, and I intend in no way to do some of the assclown things i've seen people do. Initially i wanted to get a 750 gixxer but smaller bike is smarter for the start.

How much would I pay for insurance on a used R6 or CBR600 or something?
I'm 18 with no convictions "on my record"

Yes of course people will still tell me I'm going to die, it's a choice people make. Of course I'm not invincible, but I'll do my best. Wear a helmet, don't be crazy, and assuming I do that, I'll accept any consequences.

Thats what I tell my friends. If its to hot to gear up im keeping my butt at home in the A/C. Not to mention if its to hot its not even pleasant to ride especially if you get stuck in stop and go.

Thats for the look out but yeah I had someone mention that to me before so I do keep an eye open for it. Its mainly the stuff that gives you the thought of "Wow... thats freakin awesome!" I have their original hooligan gloves and I have the new MERC TEAM STAGE 2 textile. It has the armor and what not in it so its not to bad. I used to have a nice Alpine textile but it didnt match my new bike so I sold it.

Why do you think I dropped the big cash on the Alpine leather coat instead.

Oh yeah, U turns on a bike are hard for any noob. You might want to practice in an empty lot before you look stupid dropping your bike in the middle of an intersection.

Also, to all the people buying 600cc as their first bike (new or used) PLEASE DON'T. Learning on any Japanese 600cc bike would be like learning to drive with an Evo. In the great words of Chris Rock, "Yeah you can do it, but that don't make it a good ****ing idea"

Seriously though, starting off with something smaller will make you a better rider.

Cant agree more, saw a 07 zx6rr with temp plates get laid down at an intersection few weeks ago, fairings are not cheap and these bike total easily.
The new 600's have close to 110rwhp
For example new 1000's have about 140rwhp and they are ungodly fast.

Wow reading your sig I just found out Mcrae died, terrible

Thanks a lot guys. Really glad I made this thread.

We just had a carpet guy here (he's a friend of a friend of my moms) and he was telling me a story about how he had an 18 yr old friend or something and last week he was on his way to work (he worked at a bike, snowmobile, etc. place) at 9 in the morning on his CBR990RR and suppose ably some lady cut a turn (in a dodge dakota) and he was doing 40mph... ran right into her. He died, the bike was in 4 pieces, the wheel and tire were 150 feet away. This is all before the investigation, but thats what he said. The kid didn't even have time to react, as in; laying down the bike, jumping off to the side, etc. The skid marks were 20 feet long..

Just a bit scary...

But anyways, I am a cautious/smart driver in my car, and I know what bikes are capable of/capable of doing... so I a MORE than sure I'd be even more cautious/smart on a bike.

Again, thanks a lot guys for the replies!

"like they say...there are two people who ride bikes...the ones that have fallen..and the ones that will fall...it will happen eventually...you cant sop joe blow who decides to cut out in front of you w/no warning"

I agree with this statement. I took two Rider Safety Classes, which I recommend, and I got hit by another car. Most of the time it's not you, it's the people around you who care not look for you or pay attenttion to you.

If you do get a bike don't be a aquid, WEAR YOUR GEAR. I wore full leathers and that was the only thing that prevented me from getting skin graphs when I got hit by the other car going 75mph.

My insurance was $900 full coverage for a year.

250

Dont waste your money. Buy a good used 600 or 750. My first bike was a '98 GSXR 750 and TOTALLY glad I learned on that. After I got comfortable and learned some on it it was still more than enough to enjoy and have fun with. As a rider you never really stop learning. You just add to what you know.

I would say if you're not somewhat scarred of what you buy its likely to get to comfortable and cocky on it. Then again if you're to scarred of it thats not good either. I feel the 750 is a happy median and it a good beginner bike. I may also think that because I rode dirt bikes growing up and knew the general basics of a "motorcycle". Some may not agree.

Remember...... When you dont respect the machine is when it will hurt you.
