For those who have, or have had a bike.
I was browsing the net, and came across this good article/guide on Sport Rider. It's a pretty informative article for riders, especially the novice ones, like myself. Heck, it might even be helpful, or informative to you experienced riders..

That is a good article. After a few close calls I just decided not to ride on the street. I have a street legal bike now but go out at 6am when its not too hot an hit the backroads for a bit. I would still much rather be on a roadcourse where it safer and I can see what a sportbike can do.
If you become a good rider you will be a better driver.

Going used is definitely a good idea, as it is almost guaranteed that you will drop at one point or another. Invest in a good jacket and helmet and always wear them when you ride! There's always a chance something could happen, but that likelihood drops drastically if you ride smart and not like a donkey. Taking riding classes makes a difference too.
