Thumbs up Evo IX to Infiniti G37S Review

Little overview, after owning a Type R Integra I purchased a 2006 Evo IX MR back in October of 2005. Loved the car, had it flashed by Al and loved it even more. With the need for speed this car delivered.

Here’s what I loved about the Evo
VERY FAST, even in the wet!
Great shifter
Fantastic steering response and cornering grip

Here’s what caused me to outgrow the Evo sooner than later
Terrible turning radius
Not many creature comforts
Since it’s a rally car the body did not stay as flat on turns as say a Type R Integra or BMW
At age 29 the wing and looks where not “ideal” but I still had a soft spot for how it looked.
Even with 4wd the Evo did not have traction control. This is a nice feature for saftey to have in a car (as long as you can turn it off).

After a year and a half with the Evo I felt it was time to move on. I really liked the BMW 335 but this was not cheap (BMW charges way too much for its options) and the looks seemed a bit “soft”. I drove the 350Z, IS350 and was not impressed at all. With a little luck, I stumbled upon the recently released G37. It is way cheaper than the BMW 335 with all the options and offered very similar performance. Plus the G37 has an LSD standard and the 335 does not offer this option.

I purchased the G37S (19 inch wheels and 14 inch brake package) plus 4 wheel steering and will defiantly say this is not a gimmick feature. I’ve driven both and love the feel of this car with the 4 wheel steering. Of course I went with the 6-speed transmission.

With 330 HP the G37 is very quick and is not a disappointment. It’s a very satisfying car to drive once you have a couple days of seat time to transition your driving style from the Evo. The shifter feel is not quite as precise as the Evo but there are many things that make up for this aspect. The G37 sounds amazing, it has very good midrange and top end power, the G corners flat and the traction control system is very advanced – noticeably more refined than the system in the E46 M3, and the G has so many creature comforts and tech features it will take a long time to get tired of this car (touch screen navigation, internal 9 gig hard drive, Bluetooth, compact flash card slot for MP3’s, iPod adaptor). Not to mention the car is gorgeous.

If anyone is outgrowing the Evo and wants a car that might be good to transition if you have a little more money to spend, this might be the ticket for you. Hope this is helpful for you guys. I really enjoyed owning and driving an Evo IX for a while. Glad I was a part of this community of driving enthusiasts.

Here's my new G37

I lost the part that people bought an evo for looks and creature comforts........

You said it though,

The evo is a rally car, a rally car is not meant to have creature comforts or traction control???? What is traction control in an awd car?

I know this probably sounds mean or I am being a smart A$$. I really am not and your car is extremely nice but it almost sounds like you bought an evo for the wrong reasons.......

Current technology traction control is an amazing thing. It can do things a driver can't do, awd or not.

I purchased an Evo for all the right reasons and loved it! I desired more in a car after 1.5 years of driving the evo.

Enjoy your new car! I kinda went the other way around, from a Mazda6s to the Evo - and I don't miss the quietness or the climate control or anything else. I just want to drive hard and own the road !

Wow I am in a state of shock, and EVO owner actually moving onto to something other than a 335i . Hope you enjoy your new car and glad you aren't a band wagon jumper like so many ex-EVO owners The G37 is a very nice car, I just wish it didn't gain so much weight, but then again look at the EVO X . Congrats on your purchase

The X will probably fill that gap where people like you desire an EVo's agility and speed but want something that doesn't feel like a tin can =)

Looks damn good! I love Nissans. Have you driven the G35/350Z? JW how different the 3.5 and 3.7 are?

Very interesting and good write up. I had an VIII sold it and bought a work truck killed me, then I got the bug for some speed and manual transmission and bought a 350 Z more comfort but still fairly quick. Well about 5 months went by and I am sorry I have driven a lot of cars and there is just nothing like an evo, so I had to get a IX MR and it has since been modded and I am getting it tuned sat. The wing is something I don't like for the fact that it really attracts unwanted attention, so I removed it and put a rexpeed spoiler on it very low key but breaks up the back a little. As far as women go and attention I am married to a hot chick I think and work with a lot of hot women in my job and I can gaurentee you those that have driven in my car would way choose a ride in the evo than say most luxury cars. In fact one hot girl at work has a G35 and she has actally driven the evo and went nuts at its ability just no comaprison to the feeling she said to anything she has been in, this is no joke but one girl said she almost had an O, that is saying something. Anyways the G37 is a beautiful car and I would like to drive and ride in one soon.

hate too lose another evo owner to a luxurious, mid-age crisis vehicle. IF I had to move on, Porsche GT3 or 911 TURBO will be the next choice.

that is why the evo has 3 LSD. front and rear and the ACD because it is a manual transmission. traction control applies to automatics. an upgrade for me would be a 911 turbo or GT3, okay maybe an IS-F to replace the IS300. but the evo, it is irreplaceable. nice G37 though, but it is not an evo

My wife is wanting a 'sports' car with manual transmission, 2-door, navigation, etc. This is one of the cars we're going to look at. Good review.
