i have several friends with rx7's and dated a girl with an rx8. the 8's are *hit, no torque and very little hp. it does handle pretty damn well though. the 7's that my friends have eat motors like no tomorrow. yea, they fly while they are together, but they are down a good bit(if your making any real power). a friend of mine with a RHD just stopped by the shop today to pick up a rotary we had taken out of a car to do an ls1 swap in. most rotary guys know it is inevitably going to give

There is nothing wrong with a properly built 2-rotor that is pushing 400whp. I stress the "properly" part. The rotary got a bad name due to mazdas ignorance. The rx-8 is a very popular car and if motors were popping left and right that would not be the case. It is nothing short of a miracle to be producing 500whp out of 1.3 liters.

uhhh...they make power every 2 strokes vs. every 4th stroke with a conventional motor. a 1.3L rotary is like having a 2.6L motor. Not too hard to make 500whp on 2.6 liters...

That said, RX-9 =

It's been downhill since the FD3.

i didnt mean to imply the rx8 motors are going boom, i was referring to the rx7. and none of the guys i know will settle for 400hp. to me that is plenty, but i think it is the lack of torque that the engines make that makes the owners strive for higher numbers

That's pretty cool. If the 2008 Skylines lower to $40K in 2012 then I'd prefer those. Most likely they won't drop that low that fast, but I'd like to continue to dream.

It's classified as a 1.3 therefore it is a 1.3. I have no clue what you are talking about. Are you saying since I drive a 2.o liter 4 stroke, I actually have an 8.0?? That doesnt sound right. Ive actually worked on a rotary and the only thing that is truely a PITA is gettin the 13 y.o bolts to come loose!!!

Some countries charge licensing fees based on engine size..
with engines such as the 13B being just a 1.3 Mazda can now sell cars cheaper than others.
Depends on where you live though...Over here to license a vehicle we need to pay fees/cc

Rotaries are soooo common here with 90% of them still running well over 10 years now...the amount of first, second and 3rd gen rx7's we have are amazing..

with extra proper care they are great.
but without...will give you problems within no time!

Ah the joys of viewing OT regs in action.

There was actually a really good article regarding the controversy of measuring displacement on a wankel the same way you would with a piston motor in a magazine a few years ago. Mazda measured the displacement of the wankel based on the displacement of one chamber per rotor. The 13B has two rotors so that's the first indication something's amiss. Turns around Mazda measured their 13B using the method you would with a 2 stroke motor; unfortunately it's not. Since the rotors still have an intake, compression, power, and exhaust strokes, that method never should've been used. With 4 stroke motors, you have two crank revolutions per intake stroke while the wankel gets one intake stroke per revolution per rotor of the eccentric shaft. Therefore, technically, the wankel's rotors have the equivalent of two combustion chambers per rotor hence 1.3 x 2 = 2.6 liters.

Yeah I can see how they suck.

They would be particularly bad if Mazda added direct-injection-like fuel delivery to help combat the rotary's pre-ignition/detonation weakness.
small yes light no... they are too heavy id rather just slap a ls1 in there more reliable more horsepower and torque and lighter motor

Exactly!!! Look how many ex diehard rotor heads have now swapped in LS1's. There is a less than a 40lb difference between a Ls1 and a two rotor, so much for light weight.
