NE1 versed in VW Beetle engine??
An easy way to check if your coil is causing your check engine light is to fill a spray bottle with water, start your car somewhere dark (or at night), and spray water onto the coil pack (a black brick like object on the drivers side of the engine (the spark plug wires end on the pack)). If you see sparks, your pack is cracked.
Please be very careful if you are going to do that test. Common sense tells us that water and electricity dont mix.
Let us know.

The fuel filter is under the car.
I have a 99 jetta with the 2.0 ABA engine which is probably the same as the one in your car. I had the exact same problem when I hosed off my brake booster after spilling some brake fluid on it. At first the car would not start at all but kept cranking. Then I checked for codes and got a misfire on cylinder 2 and 4. I checked the cap, plug and wires and they were all good and dry. I waited the next day and it started up but would misfire and stutter when you got on the gas so I could only drive slow. Another day passed and then it acted normal again and all was resolved. I looked at what the problem could be and found the coil to be next to the brake booster bolted on the firewall which caused the issue. It sounds like it could be your issue as well. BTW, good luck changing the plugs on these cars without the special spark plug wire puller made for VW and Audis.

i actually changed the ignition coil, which was pretty easy, spark plugs were also changed and one of the fuel injectors i thought was bad....i didn't change the wies however they seemed to be ok....on the old iginition coil however there was residue and corrosion on the C spark plug, so maybe the wires are infact bad and i should change all 4 of them....maybe i'll try taht first.
As long as you have changed the plugs and all the ignition components coils, wires, plugs. I dont know if the VW have a resister pack or not but if they do check that also which you can use a volt meter to check if they are too expensive to just replace.
Then like i said before go to the fuel system. Fuel pump, fuel filter, pressure regulator.
Please remember to clean the MAF with Carb Cleaner or Brake Clean if you got some just to rule that out.
PM me if you want to talk over the phone we can figure it out.
Chris
thanks chris, and rest of you for all the support....I will def be doin the FPR and FF within the next few days to ruel those out..will keep you posted....

Heres something else, not sure if this matters or not.....but looks like on the FPR there is a hose that points towards the firewall......but theres like a 6" hose that the other end connects to nowhere, not sure if that is suppose to be connected to something or not..
yes, i know, thing is...i signed up, its been about week and half and i haven't gotten access yet, it says i have to wait for some admin to approve my account...
Chris
hmmmmm, ok, i'll take a look at that tomorrow!!i cant tell where the vacoom connects to...i'll take a picture tomorrow if i can't find teh source
If its the vacuum source your talking about that goes to the Fuel Pressure Regulator and that hose isnt connected to anything then there is no way of controller fuel pressure.
..i gonna try cleaning maf tomorrow.
