Evo bike riders!
My first bike was a 600GSXR, It was plenty fast for the experience I had. All the japanese bikes are relatively affordable and not terrible on maintenence. I sold it when I started to heavily modify my Evo. Since the summer is back around I've started searching for a new bike. Narrowed it down to a Ducati 999S or a MV Augusta F41000. The augusta is rediculous and my first choice. When I was in similiar shoes to you the 600GSXR was a perfect match. Keep an eye on maintenece intervals when looking for a used bike.
Importjake, I recently picked up a brand new 2007 model suzuki sv650 from a dealership for $5500. I dont know if you prefer new or used but thats right around your price range. If you want to know what the bike looks like ive got pics here> https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=343893
I had a GSXR 750 and a 1000. I have been riding for a while, so I really liked the 1000 more. I dont agree with people saying start on a small 250cc bike. Its nothing like riding a sportbike, so the only thing you will earn is how to lean. I feel if you have self control you can learn on a sportbike. I started on an R6, and my buddy started on a R1.
Heres my GSXR 750:

Suzuki's build quality is not as good as Honda or Yamaha. More squids ride Suzuki than any other brand. You know, the wife beater/flip flop crowd. Kawasaki is getting better but they're still not up there with Honda or Yamaha.
For the street, you can't beat a V-twin although a V4 comes pretty damn close. I've ridden just about every bike out there, from MV Agusta 1000R's to Ducati's to Yamaha R1's. If you choose to buy a liter bike as your very first bike, be very very careful and make sure you have a good life insurance policy to take care of the family you'll leave behind.
