Where do the names "Bluebird" and "Fairlady" originate?
So I was having a discussion with a coworker and she asked "why would you want a car called a bluebird". It made me question the name and wondered where Nissan/Datsun came up with the names "Bluebird" and "Fairlady". I couldnt find anything online about it.
Anyone know?

Why do they put 350Z instead of just 3.5? Why does BMW do numbers for the series? Why is the Evo called an Evo? I think Lambo is the only car company who names their cars out of a way to make complete sense, after the bulls. I mean, I wouldn't pick a Lancer in order to go Lancing... a small coupe would do much better at that
But good question all the same, hope someone can answer you. What kind of car does she drive?

all very good questions UT but honestly i think that the numerical nomenclatures for cars are actually alot simpler to understand than names like silvia, bluebird, skyline, fairlady.evo is acutally kind of easy, it is the evolution from the base lancer, but then again the lancer is kinda odd, i will admit that, there are alot of car names that are well odd and hard to understand the reasoning behind them
Numerical usually makes sense in some way or another. 325. 3-series, 2.5 liter motor. 350z, 3.5 liter motor. Etc... But still, why all the extra crap? Not saying they don't need it, but who decided the 3-series should be a 3-series, and why? Or who decided it should be a 350z instead of a 3.5z? Evo does make sense, that was kind of a joke, but very few others make sense without some sort of back story.
domestic cars had better names in the 50's, 60's and 70's, some are still around but i mean like, mustang, its a small horse but very fast for its size, roadrunner is a fast bird, a corvette is a highly maneuverable warship, get me? i dont think there was as much thinking put in on cars around the world, Lamborghini did it right, Ferrari, Rolls Royce, but i guess people in japan didnt care as much lol

Ferrari did it right. They kind of half have good names now and half stupid letter/number designations. Scuderia is tons of fun to say though... Rolls Royce is good... Lambo cracks me up, but is good as well... I agree that the older cars seem to have had better names.
^+1 muscle cars from the 50'60 and up did have very good names and Ferrari did a good job except for a few, Lambo is kinda of like Lamo with a b put in there lol so its kinda funny to me, but yes i agree that some cars names seem to just be thrown together and not thought out at all. that is just my .02 lol
i agree with ferrari being half right lol i thought of that like 5 minutes after posting it but think of like the Testarossa not the F430
I am not sure if this is accurate, but from what I remember, the creator of the original Z went to see the musical "My Fair Lady" and he thought leading actress was beautiful, and so he named the car FairLadyZ. I think that is how it went, feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
Hmmmmmm i think you might be on to something, i did a little research last night and i think i saw something along those lines, dont remember though. he he new years lol. Oh and Chaba, i wasnt arguing, i was just making a bad joke. lol bad taste i know but hey it was late lol. around 6 am here when i posted that lol
