It depends on the state you are buying from. Prior to the evo, every out of state purchase I had made was taxed in the state it was being registered in. Then I bought the evo in CA, and they refused to let me take it off the lot without paying taxes unless I was having it professionally shipped. The taxes in my state were "forgiven" with my proof of taxes paid in CA. I can only speak to purchasing vehicles in SD, ND, MN, MT, WY, UT, and CA. All but CA were paid in my residing state despite purchasing them out of state. Also, you should be able to negotiate reducing the dealer doc fee since they don't have to do anything with the registration or tax documents. It's a bunch of **** anyway.

Good luck!

Obviously, with the economy in mind, would prefer not to get a domestic and most importantly, something not gas guzzling...
4WD is a must, preferably something that's not all-time AWD...
Choices pondered so far, mazda cx-7 (but it's a turbo, so don't know what that'll do for insurance rates), mitsubishi outlander, and mebee a subaru tribeca
Gas mileage wise, the outlander seems to have it right now, looks and fun factor - cx-7, and i really don't know why tribeca
Highlanders seemed to have jumped up 5-6K ever since their initial models came out a few years back...
Money is also definitely a factor - want to keep it < 25K if poss...
considering your parameters of "no domestic, good off-road capability, not expensive" -
my suggestions are:

Mitsubishi Outlander (fwd, or 4wd lock),
Toyota Rav4 and 4Runner (4wd lock, and 4L),
Nissan Xterrra or Pathfinder is amazing!

i can tell you from experience that these few suvs are great off road, and are still very good onroad. they are stellar in terms of reliability and have lots of room inside. as far as price, u can get any of these 4 suv's under $30k (base models)

* most other mid size SUVs (and there are dozens out there) are either good on-road, or off-road, not both.

* If you dont mind Domestic cars - then Jeep Grand cherokee is great. but stay away from Wrangler and jeep liberty... these 2 are strictly for off-road.

* and if you dont mind Korean, then Hyundai Santa Fe, & Kia Sorento are actually great vehicles, lots of standard features, low price, and great warranty.

My sister-in-law bought a 2007 RDX new. now has it for 2 years.
never had problems or breakdowns. always found it comfortable, roomy, and even fast! it looks good, and is great with gas.
however, 2 times that it snowed, she got stuck on her own block... now, when it snows, she just takes another suv they have in the family, and doesnt even consider the RDX.

There's a lot of good information in this article, and the price range is right for what your looking at. I would ignore the places if I were you and look at the specifics about off and on road handling. They have the 4runner in 5th place because of the hood scoop, ugly climate controls, and roof to low. I'm 6'4" and have no problems, so I don't know what was going on in their car. But otherwise there's quite a few specifics they keyed in on.

hey guys thx a lot for the help! Checked out the outlander yesterday (pls see my thread on midwest region "South Holland Mistu pt 2) and she loved it...4wd, moonroof, sound pkg and the 3rd row seating, and the warranty was pretty kool as well...we'd have one sitting in our garage right now, but like i said pls read the post, very disparaging esp considering the times we're in now...

^ Went to the mountains with friends last week. rode in an Outlander in 6" of snow all weekend. even went off-road for some photos... did not get stuck for one second. fit 4 adults and a dog with skiing gear, no problem.
they bought it used, 2008 model (no navi), just 10months old, 16k miles, for $18k, at the wholesale auction (relative is a dealer) in PA.
retail price at a used car lot would probably be about $21,000

Used BMW is a money pit.

My little bro has a 4runner that is a couple years old with the V6, he beats the **** out of it and it keeps running. And I mean he really beats the **** out of it and does not maintain it well at all. It drives like an old truck though, worse than my 95 Bronco tow vehicle lol.

venza is nice, but has zero off-road or snow capability. and he stated that he needs a good 4wd system
