The VW's 2.0L turbo is rated at 200 HP. Not bad - as long as you're ok with having over 100 less (stock) horsepower then the Evo.

I previously owned a Mazda 3s. While it was a very nice car (in my opinion) and pretty peppy (about 170 HP NA), it was also boring - for me. Going from an Evo -- I'm sure it will seem very slow.

I'm sure it's a nice car. I know people who swear by VWs.

I had both at the same time for about 2 years and there is quite a difference. The GTi was OK to drive, it felt like driving the Evo at partial throttle. You'll really regret it if you get rid of the Evo for a GTi.

Hi,

If you don't mind my opinion I will tell you what I think about my GLI MKV with DSG, it is basically the same car but sedan.

I purchased my car from the showroom, it had all the bells and wistles(including the 18" BBS rims with 5 round spokes). I accidentally fou8nmd that they were BBS because one day I was changing the oil and while underneath I saw the stamp on the inner part of the rim.

The engine stock isn't bad but for a 2.0 liter turbo is way behind the competition specially if you compare it with the Cobalt SS turbo(ecotec) which gets similar gas mileage an much more performance, off course the Evo falls under the same category.

Our GLI put down 203lb-tq and 190whp on a Mustang Dyno on 91oct, we then put a cat less downpipe, a cat back, an air filter and a GIAC ECU tune and the car went to 230whp and 285lb-tq (mustang Dyno).

I highly recommend you get the DSG, it pays off itself:

Better gas mileage
better acceleration
smoother shifting
and it comes with launch control

Resale value is better as well, remember, VW pionered the dual clutch concept, everyone else copied for production cars.

Don't ask the VW to be a Evo, it will never be like that, you have to spend a lot of money to make it comparable, the stock turbo on the VW is small and limited, to make decent power you really need to put a turbokit and remember, it is a FWD car so do the math: lots of power + poor traction= poor aceleration.

The interior is very very nice, well built, quality. Our brake pads and disc brakes are lasting very well(turning 20000 miloes this month and not a single issue).

We are getting an average of 25mpg city driving and close to mid 30's on hwy. The car is very quiet on the hwy, the gear ratio in 6th gear is great for low noise and good gas mileage.

The brigestone potenzas are OK but you do'nt have to put the same tires, they are a good compromise between durability and performance. My favorite feature got to be the on board computer, it is top notch, it has absolutely everything you need to know and more.

Anyway, The GTI is what I wanted but the wife wanted the sedan(GLI), if your wife is OK with it the GTI would be my first choice, it is an excellent car in every aspect, yes you could get a Cobalt SS and be faster, or a Mazdaspeed 3 and be faster as well, sit on a new 09 GTI and drive it and see the difference, excellent quality.

Last but not least, the new 09 has a different engine now, I think is called FSI. Take care and PM if you have any questions.

Carlos

I got a MkV 6speed.
I test drove the DSG and it is amazing, but i like stick shift better, more fun . The GTI overall is pretty close to perfect for the price. If i listed all the cool things about it I'd be here all day, just search on google and check out some reviews. They are ALL positive, and the GTI beats any car in it's class.
It all depends what you want the car for. I personally wouldn't trade an Evo for a GTI. but if you are looking for a more refined daily driver that is still quick and fun to drive then the GTI is the best choice.

However if you want a race car to keep modding, you should keep the evo.

276 - 200 = 76

76 < 100.

Subtraction, a lost art.

The GTI is a great car. As other people have noted you will not find the same build quality, fit and finish or interior quality in a closely priced competitor. The WRX and Cobalt SS will both outperform the VW, but most people don't buy the GTI for drag racing.

I would recommend waiting until the Fall when we should see the Mark 6. I believe that it is using the same Chasis and Drivetrain. I think the majority of the changes are on the Exterior/Interior. VW is going back to it's roots and getting rid of the Mark 5 front bumper.

I have also read rumors of a GTI-R that would be using the the TT-S 2.0L TFSI 270hp engine with a 7-speed DSG and AWD. VW's track record would tell us that it will probably never make it to the U.S.

They call the revamped engine the TSI. They went to a Timing Chain, Different Air box and I believe a new head configuration with different cams

They MAY have gotten rid of the much maligned Intake Manifold Flapper Motor (German over-engineering at it's best).

BTW, Nice review Carlos
