Believe it's one of the radar sensors for the active cruise control system. I think they are heated as well.

 

ah ok, thought maybe that was what it was for. I have never actually seen it before, but it is a pretty expensive option and the people out here are the type that get the base model and do the emblem delete so that they can front on it being the big motor one.

 

Imagine getting in a light bumper accident, or slightly tapping the curb with the front bumper and damaging that thing.

BMW includes their servicing with the purchase of a car... new cars are covered by 4/50 warranty... and they cover EVERYTHING.... Used cars from them lately have a 6 year 100k warranty.... free maintenance for 2 or 3 of those 6 years, not sure. Theyre really not that bad, out of warranty is like pissing in the wind... They might run forever or cost you $500-1000 a month a repairs.

 

I have a few friends with new BMW's. They track, eat rotors, go in - get new rotors, track some more. I'd say that is a great deal.

 

They cover everything, but good luck trying to get some dealerships to actually cover/give it to you when time comes!

I wouldn't know though, I only drive old cars.

I have worked for BMW for almost 10 years. Believe it or not I want to put rotors on every single brake job that comes in. I also try and make it a 2 axle brake job even if you only need fronts or rears just to make it a better paying ticket. You get new brakes and rotors (that you already paid for with the maint plan) and the shop and I make more money on the deal. BMW has started calling back for random rotors though and measuring them so we have had to cut back.

The radar cruise/night vision camera in the bumper is around $4500 for just the part you see there on a 7 series that I replaced months back. Freakin nuts!

 

Yeah, I think BMW including free service was their answer to not being able to force owners to use OEM parts/fluids/service due to the Magnusson Moss act.

 

Worked out pretty well... I rarely hear about owners with modded BMW's complaining about service and warranty. At the same time theyre only a hand full while 9/10 evos have at least 1 mod on them....

I have never had BMW say no for my car or anyone I know's car while under the service warranty. Even for cars that were obviously abused. The wapce has a Mini and I sent her in to the dealership right before the service warranty ended and they did her brakes even though they didn't need it quite yet just to get it done before it runs out. I have no love for BMW due to various experiences with the cars and the dealerships, but their service warranty thing is legit

Of course, it is built into the price of the car, so it is not really free

Once the warranty runs out, sell the piece of **** though
