2001 Audi A4 1.8 Turbo quattro

I'm thinking about buying (with my son) a used 2001 Audi A4 1.8T quattro with abut 100K miles for my son as his first car. Looks like the car has been really well maintained. Anyone got anything nice to say about older A4 1.8T's?

I've worked on them before, they're built like tanks. Really heavy and solid, would probably be pretty safe. The 1.8t isn't a bad engine either so it has some potential.

There are very iconic when it comes to the aftermarket mods. With little money you can improve the power and gas mileage dramatically, I think the Quattro uses the KO3S turbo, small but and upgrade of the KO3.
Giac sells a OBDII software/plug that you can change maps from inside just by plugging this cable/plug. I think your son will love it.

Just make sure all the maintenance was done. Most of the cooling system gets replaced around 100K miles. Also if its a stick the clutch can be smoked within six months pretty easily.

Thanks for the heads-up.

CARFAX shows regular maintenance done at one of the better-known Audi dealers in the area. Car also has a CARFAX Buyback Guarantee included, for whatever that is worth.

Car's an automatic since it's going to be used to teach a couple of my kids to drive, so no clutch issues.

Auto, or tiptronic? If it is tip, get the GIAC chip for the transmission as well, changes the shifts from long and sloppy to very quick

It'll be a very long time before they get near the Evo.

His kids are lucky? Look at half of us on here! We're all spoiled asshat brats with no sense of respect. Or some bs like that.

I co-owned an S2000 with my dad when I hit 16. 2 months before high school graduation he sells his condo in SF for double what we bought it for, and buys me the Evo. Fast forward to now where I've bought stuff more with my own money, but my sister's '04 325xi is sitting in the garage next to the STi and my parent's Lexus. They bought her an '04 Audi TT, she hated manual and the two seater, so my dad took a loss on it after a year and traded it in for the BMW... All this before she was even 16.

On the flip side, make sure you toss them all into autox and track racing the instant they are old enough. I've been doing it since I got my license till now (more than 6 years later) and I (as well as everyone who knows me) can tell you it has made a huge difference in my ability on the street.

Oh yeah, and to the OP: The TT was an amazing car, and a good friend (who's been into cars forever) just bought an S4 that he loves. Quattro is also one of the most amazing AWD systems I've driven. The TT's quattro system definitely felt worlds beyond the Evo.

Yeah, since the Evo, I am a big fan of AWD cars (having come from a series of RWD Mustang GT's). I'll also sleep a little better when they start winter driving with AWD, too.
