Pontiac Being Phased Out
I wonder if people will car so little when/if Mitsu pulls the plug on the US market. I mean, if only having one decent car is the criteria, then Mitsu most definitely fis the bill. Outside of our community people simply do not care about Mitsu and many people who are not "car" people don't even know they still operate here. I can't count the times people have asked about my "Subi" and when I explained it was a Mitsu Evo, they replied that they didn't know Mitsu still sold cars here
1 = Truck (Raider)
2 = Crossovers (Outlander and Endeavor)
3 = Cars (Galant, Lancer, and Eclipse)
The Lancer is Mitsu's answer to Honda's Civic in that there are several different trim levels. That leaves Mitsu in a good position to compete even in a poor economy. A base Lancer looks awesome, (better than a Civic) and it can be had for under $14,000. That's $1,000-$1,500 less than a base Civic Coupe or Sedan!!!
I think
will survive the U.S. market.
Mitsubishi is also part of a global car company that does fairly well in its home market, which itself is a child of a VERY large parent company.
Pontiac had no presence outside North America and is part of a struggling parent company. Its lineup was almost completely redundant to other parts of the parent company.
The situations are very different.

I heard only Chevy, GMC, Cadillac, and Buick are the pillars. I assumed that meant Saturn would also go, along with Pontiac, Saab, etc. It is kinda sad to see and I would hope they would keep the "hits" such as the Solstice and G8 somehow.
Saab is for sale, but will likely be shut down. The Swedish gov't has shown no interest in preserving the company.
Hummer is probably for sale, or may just be killed outright. The problem here is that while Hummer's image is horrible, the vehicles are fairly profitable, because most of the R&D cost is done at the Chevy/GMC level.
I think Saturn has a future because they have a good, distinct model lineup. Hard to tell though.
Agreed with your points on Hummer being profitable (especially since Chevy and GMC don't seem to be going anywhere) and Saturn. BTW re: Hummer, I used to call my buddy's H2 a Suburban or a Yukon. Man that pissed him off.
There is only one Hummer and the rest are just wannabes. It is sad to see a car company close its doors but it is necessary for the health of the parent company. I've never understood the reason for having so many brands selling the same crap with just a different grill.
Saturn...

Nothing set in stone as far as I know, but rumors of this have been flying around.
A group of investors including Black Oak Partners LLC says it has approached General Motors Corp. about buying its Saturn division as the Detroit automaker works to get smaller and shed brands.
The group, working together with a number of Saturn retailers, said Wednesday it would initially source vehicles from GM but expects over time to offer smaller, fuel-efficient models from a range of other manufacturers. Terms of the bid were not disclosed.

for example; back in the late 90's, if u were looking for a small car and were comparing the following:
1)chevy cavelir
2)corrola
3) civic
and u have always wanted to buy an american car but never liked that cavlier, so u end up buying either the civic or corrola ( this is just an example, u can use diff cars for the sake of comparing) , however now Pontiac made the wonderful Pontiac Sunfire, which is basicaly the carbon copy of the cavlier, but for the ordinary buyer , u won;t be able to tell. but yet the sunfire was hotter than the cavleier, and therefore, u eneded up buying thier car over a different brand. Chi-Chang!
hope this helps.
