Strange, but true. Not an Evo
I think that the issue with the GT3 is that most people, even a lot of car nuts, don't know what it is. They just assume "Oh, there's another douche with a 911" without knowing that it's a GT3 (or even what a GT3 is)
And no, I'm not calling you a douche.

I personally want to jump ship to a new Cayman S or an E92. I want a P car bad...I can understand being guilted about having a GT3 and not getting everything out of it but damn giving it up for a X. Thats like an evo guy going back to a civic. Atleast you probably aren't as scared to drive it or where you park it. I just want something a little more refined myself. Although I have found it to be increasingly difficult to find anything that rivals the performance of an evo though...especially when you start doing mods to them. I would say an E92 M3 or Cayman S is about the only cars I have found worthy...or a C6 vette atleast for respectable prices.

I ended up building up a dedicated track car (didn't want to risk 125k on track, with the way insurance companies were going with policy exclusions), and ended up buying a beach home for the family.
I do miss the exotic appeal of the Ferrari or GT3 now and again, but not enough to spend the jack to get one. There's also that 'been there done that' aspect.
BTW used 996 GT3s can be had for cheap these days. Amazing actually.
I seriously considered getting rid of the Evo and jumping into something way more expensive. In the end, I realized just what the OP is saying. My car is paid off and I've spend a good $15k on mods. It is such an enjoyable, exciting machine and I can not think of any vehicle that would also be as reliable and cheap for just under $40k. The next best thing would easily cost 3 times as much and I can't justify 300% increase in cost for a 15% performance increase, IF THAT.
The CT9A is truly superior platform for bang for the buck. Period. Good job OP.

The GT3 is so nice. I really want to upgrade to one from the evo in the future. Is it a big jump in terms of performance/handling/etc? Also is it comfortable enough to drive on a daily basis? Thanks
Big jump in terms of handling/performance? Yes, but (i) that performance difference is not really accessible on the street; you'll need a track extract the difference, and (ii) the GT3, like all 911's, are a MUCH harder car to drive fast than any evo.
I would to say that the GT3 and Evo are on opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of accessiblity. An evo will make an average driver look good, a GT3 will make an average driver look pretty bad, especially going off track backwards.
Which GT3? The 996 GT3 is about as stiff and noisy as a Evo 8/9's. The 997 GT3 is very similar to the X in terms of NVH. Both, however, are harder to use around town given the lower ride height and long front overhang. With both of these, it makes it tough to get up some driveways. You pretty much have to take all mild inclines at a 45 degree angle, then cut it to get up the driveway. You can forget about parking garages.

Edit: Also I believe on the 997's they have this lift system package, so takes care of the rubbing issue.
Anyway, the evo is a cool car. Not only is it an amazing in its own right, the driving experience rivaling exotics, but for the cash it's unparalleled. I understand with clarity how many of you pine for the 'next' upgrade. (reading the E92M3 thread made me think of this) But once you strip away the badge and concessions to price based on interior finish and paint quality, the driving experience rivals the best rigs on the road.
nice cars sir, the Evo is such an amazing platform though, i think you made a good conscious decision and you'll leave the GT3 in the dust when you start modding lol when I went to the track I ran a GT3 who went 12.5 to my 11.7....he came out of his car and shook my hand saying that "its amazing what they can do with 4 cylinders these days, good job" needless to say I was happy i won
Coupla things. When I've referenced 'track' I generally mean a road course. But, I'm not peeing on a 1/4 mile run. I've never done one, but would like to.
- I don't think it makes a lot of sense to seek out a car that is tough to drive due to inferior suspension/chassis tuning, BUT it make a lot of sense to seek out a car that is *engaging*. One that reacts to throttle and steering inputs with sensitivity. Frankly, that's where the evo is a bit of a letdown. It grips like a priest on a 11 year old choir boy, but lacks the chassis feedback. . . playfulness. When it does let go, it does so in a pretty well controlled 4 wheel drift, seemingly independent of wtf the driver does with the wheel, brakes or gas. But, 99% of the time on the street, I drive within the limits.
- Track, it's all about entertainmnent and playing with slip angles. That's why my track car will always be RWD, an aggressive LSD, naturally aspirated, and preferably and inline 6 with individual throttle bodies.
No traction control, no stability control. Just mechanical grip and a nut behind the wheel testing his limits.
- Yup, the front lift option cures one of the biggest drawbacks of the GT3.
I'm a founding member at H2R, but haven't taken the evo. Gotta do that to see what it can do.
I am glad that Bo finally got it off the ground and a reality. It was a long time coming. Also good to see Bo's old shop become a Ferrari dealer, right here in lil ol Austin.
The 997 GT3. Thanks for the response. 3 is exactly what attracts me so much towards the GT3. RWD, naturally aspirated. Its very pure. Hard to drive is what I'm looking for. For the car to react more to my throttle/braking/steering. Fear that the back end will come out at any second makes it all that more fun.
Edit: Also I believe on the 997's they have this lift system package, so takes care of the rubbing issue.
