What's your take on this... ???

I was in a debate with a friend of mine about cars in general and being an enthusiast. I have driven many different cars and in my experience there have been times I swore I'd love a particular one and vice versa, after actually driving it however my opinion completely changed.

My friend is a Corvette fanboi, he swears by them. He raves there is no better combination of everything in one package and he rarely even considers buying another car. I told him he is missing out.

He has a ton of misconceptions about many areas regarding cars:
-He feels that the only benefit/reason for all wheel drive is poor weather such as rain and snow...

*My take: I feel that it is about more than just poor weather, each car is unique in its own right and it is not as simple as being AWD, RWD or FWD that makes it what it is but how each attribute of a certain car compliments one another. A particular car may not be AS fast, or be better at a certain something if anything to be significantly more satisfying, it is about more than just performance numbers, it is about how it FEELS, its feedback etc. I've driven cars that are not the best at this or that however a certain something or combination of makes it a memorable vehicle.

-He swears he will never drive or consider buying cars like Porsches, M3's, S4's... anything german especially. He says it is because they are extremely unreliable and expensive to maintain or repair

*My take: He does have a reasonable concern, but I feel he has blown it out of context and is ignorant to dismiss so many great vehicles because of this misconception. While some cars are ridiculously unreliable and finicky there are others that are a bit more expensive to maintain but offer something special to justify it. I feel repair and maintenance costs can be reduced drastically if you change how you go about it, finding and independent shop, doing small things your self, buying certain parts and not others instead of getting sucked into stealership ways.

-He swears that a C5 Corvette or C5Z will always get 19mpg city and 26 mpg highway regardless of how you drive it or what is done to it... He sees this as a huge selling point to the Corvette and one big reason why it is so great.

*My take: While I can agree in stock form the C5 and even C6 will get solid MPG in the city and the highway I assured him he would see a significant drop if he drove it like a person should drive a Corvette in stock form, and especially with modification. Just because a car achieves solid fuel efficiency when driven normally it will suffer severely with a heavy foot stock or modified C5 or not.

This, I could someone with an Elise taking that standpoint but a Corvette has many faults that make it something less than the ultimate driver's car.

He has driven a few vettes, a couple RSX's, SRT-4, Kouki 240sx and an Xrunner.

how old is your friend? lol seems like he is immature. your friend needs to open his eyes. maybe someday he will have an epiphany and realize what else is out there. however, some people are just so close minded that it is pointless to argue with them.

I swear if he actually tried these things out he'd see the light but he is locked on a certain mind set.

Your friend sounds boring. Does he eat the same thing for lunch everyday, too?

Also, anyone who thinks that a GM is the best of the car world is a moron.

I really don't have friends like that. That is all I can say. He is a very close mind person, the type of person that will argue anything.

You can buy a VW and they are reliable cars. German cars are quality built. The corvettes are an icon and they sell well(just remember I just got rid of my almost new C6 Z06 modded).
Gas mileage is not bad on the vettes but it wouldn't get you 26mpg no matter what(unlike what you friend said).

Sumarizing, you friend has issues and he is confused. GM charges you also like $100 an hour to do maintenance so most car manufacturers are in the same page. Anyways, I suggest you don't really count much on that friend.

I used to be a big fan of Japanese sports cars only. Having driven my Z06 for over a year now, I have to say that I was missing out. If I won the lottery, I would probably have a car from just about every spot on the globe. I still wish I had my Evo or Sti on certain days. I still love my RX8 and my wife's new Mini is an extremely fun car also. I think most of us have been closed minded about certain cars at one time or another. Some times we dislike a certain make/model for good reasons. It took the C6 generation of Corvette to make me a beliver. I still think that the previous Corvette generations were way too big on power and could not match it with handling.
To each their own, live and let live, and all that other crap.

Couldn't have said it any better. I never wanted a vette or liked vettes until the C6 bodystyle and even then it was the fender flares and little differences that made the Z06 worth it to me.

Your friend sounds like a very narrow minded person that lacks on experience. Hopefully he is young in years I know many Vette heads that are middle aged and know nothing except "Bowtie Brotherhood!!" I can barely relate to most of them.

I love all cars and really have a GTR next on my list, but I'm not selling the Z06 for it. Will just have to save a penny at a time
