But the CA is a SOHC 1.8, and the VG30 is a V6 3 litre Quad Cam ?

I know I sound ridiculous but I will do my best to find some reading on the subject. It was in an SCC a while back talking about a JDM tuner's house S14 that was running the CA18DET (the first turbo motor the Silvia's ran), rather than the newer and more famed SR. Made a few mentions about parts compatibility between the two.

Another page in pure chart form and a bit more technical but not much. Rest of the searches I was able to bring up were in Japanese so it looks like I'm not gonna be able to post up anything.

i don't believe so. the valvetrain is where the CA shares much of its similarity to the VG series. Cam on bucket as opposed to the rocker arm that made it to the SR. Also, it has a timing belt as opposed to the SR and KA's chain. Most of the parts are interchangable with N13 pulsars and S12 200SX's

just noticed this

the CA was a DOHC. As for the VG, i don't know if each bank was a SOHC or a DOHC. I would assume it was SOHC per bank, making it a DOHC overall.

No, the VG30DETT is actually a quad cam engine, as stated by nissan in his book.. its has twin heads per bank..

i thought thought the CA was a twin cam, but havent actually opened one yet, so i thought i'd start a cam less
