fwd cars perform better on the slalom....just cuz it almost got the same as the evo doesnt mean they handle the same on a track. hell the new focus svt outperformed the viper and zo6 on the salom but that doesnt mean ****...itll get raped on any track.

No, the Evo motor doesn't use a variable valve timing scheme however the idea has been floated around that should Mitsu replace the venerable 4G63 with a new engine it'd be a MIVEC GDI engine to meet Japan's newer and stricter emissions laws.

it had a non-turbo variable valve timing MIVEC engine before but the turbo's became popular?

Not sure if I understand your question...are you asking if Mitsu had MIVEC before the Evo? Or if the Evo used a non-turbo MIVEC engine? If it's the second question, than no, the Evo has always used a turbocharged 4G63, but has undergone several upgrades in both the turbo and the engine itself over time.

I was pretty sure the NEW evo vii or viii didnt and will probly not be using any type of VTEC. thnx for the reply. How much do you thnk it would be to add a vtec type system to the motor? Is it even that posible to do as an aftermarket project?

Second:
The suspension package on the Hotchkis Celica is comercially available for a couple grand not 10. Also the BONE STOCK GTS with the gimpy rev limiter ran the slalom at 70.1, the EVO was 72.6... not really a huge difference especially considering all the technology on the EVO and the likely cost difference between the cars. BTW - Hotchkis is done prototyping and that Celica is for sale right now in case you guys want to see for yourselves
Not sure what the big deal is...
BMW's first ever FWD car... the Mini... did it with 67.6mph... thats with
110hp and 16" (or was it 15"??) WINTER tires...

http://www.roadandtrack.com/reviews/...leID=45&page=4

Can't find the result for Celica from R&T...

I believe HKS has some variable valve timing altering cam shafts available for the 4g63 evo engines. Didn't have much info on it though, saw it in an Options mag. I'm pretty sure you'd have to replace the ecu or have some type of piggy back unit to control it.

um...the whole point was the celica lapped faster than the evo, not that it outslalomed the evo, that's not a big deal.

Toyotas keeping any info on that bad boy under tight lock and key. Theres a lot of rumors out there , and misinformation, but I don't think anyone besides the Folks at Toyota in Japan and maybe a few American execs know for sure.

I dunno too much about the EVO engine besides from the general performance numbers you usually hear. To be honest I doubt it, VTEC and turbos don't get along very well, you are actually better off with a fixed cam.

As for adding VTEC or VVTI as an aftermarket add on... well... I'm gonna have to say No. They all use solenoid metered oil pressure to activate and I just don't see a way to plumb all that withou a redesigned head and Camshaft. Not to mention the engine management to run it would be a project of monumental proportions. One reason there are no US market drop in engine management systems for the 1ZZ or 2ZZ motors is that no-one in the aftermarket can afford to spend the money it would take to build the driver circuits for the Oil Control Valves and figure out how the heck to map em. Supposedly the Japanese Apexi Power FC can do it to some extent but i havent seen it so I can't say for certain.

BTW - I don't want to be a killjoy, but you should know that with the new legislation Cally's wonderfull Air ***** (read: CARB) pushed through and the gov just signed, when Mitsu brings the EVO over you may notice some significant power reductions and/or changes from the JDM version. This is bad news for all sports cars, but especially turbos with manual trannys, because its almost impoissible to properly regulate emissions between shifts on em.

What? A cam itself will not add variable valve timing to a motor. You need a control solenoid and other handy things to create a VTEC style system. The cams you're thinking of probably just have a different grind with more overlap or something similar.

if a cam changing system won't work well on turbo cars...what about a camp phasing system

it's not impossible, or even that ridiculous an idea...Toyota already uses VVT-i (not VVTL-i or VTEC, just variable cam timing, since variable lift really isn't necessary for power when you have a turbo) in their JDM Supra TT.

Not debating the usefulness of variable timing on turbocharged cars, saying that a simple cam swap doesn't give you a variable profile, but rather a different profile.
