2013 GTI: Because commuter car
Just curious, if a good commuter car was the goal and you admit this doesn't accelerate/handle/brake anything like a performance car, why not get a TDI instead? 50 mpg highway easy (yes the EPA underrates TDIs) and can tow a small trailer with ease (useful if you race a bike or a kart like I do). Everything else stays pretty much the same. Just no plaid interior, which I like too so don't feel too bad.

While it gets incredible fuel economy, they're even more expensive than the GTI, and the engine just falls over and dies after 3500rpm. It's also really easy to stall if you don't feed it enough revs to get going compared to a gas engine. I didn't feel like I could get through traffic with the TDI and just deal with not being able to pass.
While the GTI isn't a sports car either, it has great midrange pull on the interstate and the engine is at least a little fun. The GTI is also a lot quieter than the TDI in operation.
If that's the case, make sure you buy used this time around. No sense wasting more money.
I'm coming up on the last weekend of a two week vacation that has been nothing short of amazing. I feel so rested and happy.
I've been working on stereo upgrades, I replaced everything but the factory back door speakers. I got an under floor subwoofer box from FedEx yesterday, and that was the last component I needed to finish it.
A few days ago when I first put the stereo in, it sounded awful. It required a ton of tuning, messing with crossovers, and gain balancing. The end result is good. The sub plays deep and powerful, and that box is definitely my favorite part of the system. I have a little bitty 5 channel Alpine amplifier, and I can't believe how loud and clearly it drives ten speakers.
I love this car as a commuter, even though it took me a bit to warm up to it. It's just stress free driving, but with the tune and intake, it's quick enough in a straight line to be fun. The tiny turbo makes passing a breeze. You never have to downshift, even at 60mph. Just put your foot down, boost, pass.

I remember your post when talking about your bike and whether you were going to keep the Evo and get something cheap or just get something nice.
on the choice.
I just picked this up for my wife week before last:
2013 VW Jetta TDI in Platinum Gray Metallic

It's the TDI base, so it still has the black leather-ette heated seats and the 16" alloys, but doesn't have Nav, HIDs, Fender sound or the sunroof because she said she didn't want that stuff. The fuel economy is such a contrast to the Evo. I get 19.2mpg average, and the TDI is getting 43mpg mixed driving. We went from far east valley Phoenix to Orange County CA on 1/2 tank and we cruised the 10fwy @83mph. I think that tank went 615miles.
Hopefully I'll catch you on VWVortex :-)
Oh yeah forgot to mention, so my wife gets the car, and I introduce her to VWVortex, and now she wants rims and air-ride. Now I'm digging up all the memories of being stuck on the side of the road with a blown-out bag from my minitruck days

The MKVI gti is very nice car. I work on those cars every day and not too problems with them. Intake manifolds go bad and water pumps leak, those would be the bigest problems with them. Other things we see is people mis shift them and over rev, usually it ends up with blown engine. Good luck with you car and if you have any question just pm me.

Noize,
Congrats!! you always had a great taste for cars. From what I seen from you in the past years you always got something nice. I was seating on the 2013 GTI less than 2 weeks ago when I picked my 2013 Passat TDi and I must say that the GTI is simply a unique car of its own. The quality of the interior is exquisite. You will have 95% of the people on the forums making comments without actually seen the car and seating in it, I know that you got a heck of a car and is worth every cent. The seat are excellent, the steering wheel is sex and the on board computer and other equiped features are awsome.. wait, the car gets 33 mpg too(DSG)!!
Of course that it made sense for you to get the GTI, I don't blame you, most people that give opinions never experienced what is like driving a GTI, fortunately I do, and I am here to back you up and give you my personal feedback.
Yes, I had one (GTI) and yes I also had a GLI , mine were MKV but with 99% of the genetics although your Gen MKVI is much better built than mine.
The "200 hp" rated engine is really underrated, in reality is a 220hp engine output. I put an obscene 298 LB-tq of torque with a flash(Giac) and turboback (Eurojet) and an Air filter on a Mustang Dyno (at Iaperformance), many STI and Evo Owners with similar mods weren't close to that.
I had my cars tuned with APR and GIAC, both were very quick from a roll as you already know very well. These cars are deceptively fast, they are light weight, have little transmission power lose, have tremendous midrange torque and response and much better aerodynamics.
Summarizing, enjoy your sweet a$ car because it is in my opinion the best value for the money on that size car. Yeah you could had got a Mustang V6 with 305 but your GTI with GoAPR or GIac or Unitronic equals the performance of 300hp cars and you and I know it. If you didn't had the GTI I would had suggest the Focus ST also.
I am eyeballing the Gen 7 Golf, they will come with more competitive engine outputs and the R models ir rumored to have over 300hp. Take care!
