Evo vs B5 S4

Still lurking around here...haven't put the cash down on that evo yet. The dealership won't leave me alone, with weekly calls. Kinda annoying...but whatever. They must not have a lot of experience selling 30k cars.

Just a quick question, I've noticed that the B4 Audi S4's are coming down in price...they're in the same ballpark as a new EVO with price ranges from 26k to 32k depending on mileage.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I've heard the S4 (2000-2002) is fairly easy to modify to get some good power gains. I'm wondering if this car is in the same league? Anyone have any track experience or raced one?

ive heard that they actually pretty hard to modify

Paticularly the downpipes

Plus i bet that it would be a lot more expensive to mod an S4 than an Evo

they are not that expensive to modify
they use kkk turbine, and exhaust manifolds are more expensive, since they are mostly made in europe, but lots of potential with s4

Originally what I thought too...but I heard you can throw a chip in and be pulling over 300hp.

I guess the Bi-Turbo setup has it's own issues too...but with the bigger engine (2.7litre) it is tempting. I've just heard some quality issues going around....and I'm not sure how fast they really are.

it really depends on what you're looking for, I had a 2000 S4 before, Parts are quite expensive for that car. It is good for everyday if you want something more luxury. The interior craftmanship is really top notch. Performance wise, The S4 is kinda heavy with massive understeer(Autox). The car is good for everyday but I will get an evo if you want to modify it or if you are a weekend racer.

Ditto to what kevo said.

I had an '00 S4 that I traded in for the Evo. The S4 is a very pimp car but it is extremely expensive to modify and get the kind of gains that you'll get out of a comparable amount of money spent on the Evo. The quick and cheap gain to be had with the S4 is by chipping (~$600). Once you pass that threshold the costs really start to add up.

S4 wish list:
Used '00 S4 = $23000
APR Stage 3 (good for about 425@ the crank)= $6200
Downpipes = $1700
Exhaust = $1000
Clutch = $800
Intercoolers = $800
Coilovers = $1600
Stoptech or Brembos = $1800
Total: $36900

After you've spent that money you'll have an S4 that will be somewhat close to comparable performance as an Evo would with $4000 worth of mods. The S4 will be a very cool ride but will have no warranty whatsoever whereas the Evo will at least have warranty coverage on the items that haven't been affected by the drivetrain mods.

Really the cars are incomparable aside from paper specs and the basic configuration. They are worlds apart otherwise. As with nearly everything in life, it depends on what your looking for.
