Chris Harris - P1 Road/Track Test

Chris Harris drives the new $1.2 million McLaren P1 at the Yas Marina Grand Prix circuit in Abu Dhabi UAE. Before taking to the track at night, Chris Harris chats with Chris Goodwin, the Chief Test Driver for McLaren Automotive to discuss the technology of McLaren's latest offering, perhaps the definition of the modern day hypercar.

Fair warning, the McLaren Chris Harris drives in this video is the XP7, the pre-production prototype for P1. The car has had a long life over the past 15 months, driving around the world and clocking over 40,000 hard miles.

It takes 15-20 years for supercar tech to trickle down (e.g. porsche 959 differential system -> Evo VII AYC/ACD). Although some of this would probably end up maybe in 2 generations from now for sports cars.

The supercars are showing that hybrids can be done right, so we can expect to see the tech come down into more pedestrian cars for us commoners. Given the more stringent CAFE regs taking effect in years to come, the manufacturers don't really have a choice but to look for tech to keep interest in their brands while delivering power that people want to see and the MPG the Feds demand.

I feel that 2013 was the year of the EV/Hybrid. No question they have arrived and they are superior.

plus, I think the tech will reach us more quickly than it used to in the past. Things are moving at a different velocity these days.

Drayson says the battery tech we need will be ready to use within 5 years.

I doubt it will take that long, with the rate of how quick eco tech moving at the moment, i give it at best 1-3 years, hybrid system has been around for awhile now , we just haven't got much of them in the US. eco was in it infant stage even before evo x was released

on a side note ayc been around since evo 4 and ACD started with the ct9a platform so you are right in a sense

The cost of the tech is the issue, not really the implementation. I'm not sure they can get all the McLaren tech to be 1/10 the price in 5 years.

His question and response to the answer given to him @ 19:22 - 19:26 is epic. He briefly looks at the camera and the look say I'm gonna destroy her.

Love his videos, and they just keep getting better and better! Another one to check out would be his f40/f50 film. Amazing.

On a related note, the /DRIVE channel as a whole is epic. Deff worth a sub!
